Former Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello was a ‘little upset’ with Shohei Ohtani after the Giants’ 3-0 win over the Dodgers
Former Tennessee Volunteers baseball coach Tony Vitello is getting his first taste of the intense NL West rivalry between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello helped the San Francisco Giants accomplish something this week that not many MLB teams have experienced over the last several seasons — a series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants took the first two games of a three-game series against the Dodgers.
Los Angeles will look to salvage the series on Thursday.
Tony Vitello explains why he was a “little upset” with Shohei Ohtani
The Giants earned a 3-0 win against the Dodgers on Wednesday night despite facing Shohei Ohtani, who has a 0.38 ERA so far this season.
Ohtani pitched six scoreless innings against the Giants, allowing five hits while striking out seven and walking none.
After the game, Vitello told reporters that the version of Ohtani the Giants saw on Wednesday night in San Francisco was very different than the version they saw during spring training.
“I was a little upset with Mr. Ohtani on the mound, because that was a different deal than what we saw in spring training,” said Vitello. “To me, there was a big contrast… And I can’t remember if that (facing Ohtani in spring training) was before or after the WBC (World Baseball Classic), but regardless of when it was in the timeline of spring training, that was a little more getting his work in.
“And tonight — again, he would be able to speak for himself better than I — but it looked like he was going for throats. And it was pretty good stuff. At the same time, our guys — it’s not like they were all over him, by no means — but our guys stood in there well against him.”
Even for a baseball lifer like Vitello, seeing Ohtani up-close is a mesmerizing experience.
Fortunately for Vitello, the Giants were able to put some runs on the board after Ohtani left the game.
