Pros for Ashton Hampton

  • He’s a massive press man cornerback with an incredible blend of explosiveness and physicality
  • Hampton shows the ability to locate routes in front of him, quickly transitioning to make plays working back toward the LOS
  • There is a physicality to his game in both the pass and run game
  • His length can be extremely disruptive at the catch point, possessing the ability to make plays on the football
  • There is legitimate upside for Hampton to develop into a plus starter in a zone or man coverage system

Cons for Ashton Hampton

  • Hampton can get a bit grabby when working down the field, which could lead to some penalties in the future
  • There are some false steps for Hampton working in the press, and it allows for some easy separation when working vertically
  • His overall consistency is still a major work in progress, and Hampton needs to be a more dependable player from a play-to-play perspective

Background

Hampton was an extremely underrated addition for Clemson in the 2024 recruiting class and was considered to be a three-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Hampton finished as the No. 628 overall player, the No. 58 safety, and the No. 83 player from the state of Florida for the 2024 class. Hampton chose Clemson over offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, West Virginia, Syracuse, and Purdue, among others.

Despite those lower rankings, that didn’t stop Hampton from making a huge impact as a freshman in 2024. During that campaign, he was named a Freshman All-American by both FWAA and College Football Network. Over his two years, Hampton has played in 27 total games. During his time with the Tigers, he has managed to collect 72 total tackles, three interceptions, and 14 pass breakups. Hampton heads into the 2026 season as one of the best cover men in college football.

Player Evaluation

Hampton was hidden on a poor Clemson team last year, but he is a massive press man cornerback with an incredible blend of explosiveness and physicality. Hampton shows the ability to locate routes in front of him, quickly transitioning to make plays working back toward the line of scrimmage. There is a physicality to his game in both the pass and run game, which pops consistently. His length can be extremely disruptive at the catch point, possessing the ability to make plays on the football. There is legitimate upside for Hampton to develop into a plus starter in a zone or man coverage system.

While Hampton is incredibly talented physically, he can get a bit grabby when working down the field, which could lead to some penalties in the future. There are some false steps for Hampton working in press, and it allows for some easy separation when working vertically. He needs to be more efficient overall with his footwork. His overall consistency is still a major work in progress, and Hampton needs to be a more dependable player from a play-to-play perspective. There are times when his eyes can wander in zone coverage and cause him to get out of position.

Everything that Hampton needs to improve on is technical. If his technique can match his physical tools, we are looking at a Pro Bowl cover man. Hampton is that talented.
