Pros of Julian Neal
- Physical. Uses every ounce of his 202-pound frame against the run and to lean on WRs at the catch point and line of scrimmage. Will come down hard in pursuit and plays through contact very well.
- Sticky coverage. Just plasters wide receivers when locked in-phase. Gives no breathing room with close-quartered combat from both the slot and boundary.
- Ball skills. Could become better at getting his head around, but is constantly around the ball with long limbs to force tipped passes, record pass breakups, and make interceptions.
Cons of Julian Neal
- Tightly wound. Wins at the line of scrimmage and vertically. Will struggle to get in and out of his pedal and zone turns against smaller pass catchers due to his lateral limitations.
- Eye discipline. Can get caught peeking or with his eyes in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- Footwork. False steps at times and doesn’t possess high-end click and close.
Background
A San Francisco, California native, Julian Neal was a multisport and multi-positional athlete for Mission High School, where he starred in football as a receiver, defensive end, and defensive back for the football team while also playing basketball. He attended Fresno State out of high school before transferring to Arkansas in 2025, where he continued to perform against a step up in competition.
Player Evaluation
Neal is your prototypical boundary corner with lockdown man coverage tendencies; he just so happens to do it in a safety-like build. The brawny defensive back can impose his will at the line of scrimmage and behind it in the run game, yet he has the traits to be a sticky defender who plasters opposing pass catchers. He doesn’t have elite change-of-direction skills, so he needs to shore up his eye discipline and ability to get his head around, but he has the physical makeup to be a starting corner in the league.
