Browns’ free agent signing set to miss the rest of the 2026 NFL season in unfortunate news
One of Cleveland’s free agent signings from the offseason won’t play the rest of the 2026 NFL season.
The Cleveland Browns are fresh off a Week 7 win over the Tennessee Titans that moved them to 5-2 in the 2026 NFL season. That win also marked the return of defensive tackle Mason Graham, who had missed the previous couple of games with an injury. It was a sign the Browns’ defense is getting healthy at the right time, with the midpoint of the season approaching and Cleveland sitting atop the AFC North.
Still, early this week brought some bad news on the interior of the defensive line. One of the Browns’ free agent signings from the offseason won’t play a single game for the team this season.
Browns won’t activate Kalia Davis from injured reserve
Back in March, Cleveland signed former San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Kalia Davis. The hope was that he could be a depth piece on the interior, a player who takes up space and makes tackles in the trenches.
The Browns opened up his 21 day practice window a few weeks ago that opened the door for him to return. Once that stretch ended, the Browns had the choice to activate him or lose him for the season. Cleveland did not make the move to activate Davis on Monday, which means he now reverts to season-ending injured reserve and won’t suit up for the team in 2026.
The Browns signed Davis to a one-year, $2 million deal in the offseason. He was coming off a season in San Francisco where he played in 17 games with 17 starts, making 28 tackles, a half sack, and four tackles for loss. For a team looking to add a depth body up front, that kind of availability was a big part of the appeal.
Cleveland is just fine at defensive tackle
The good news for the Browns is that defensive tackle remains one of the stronger position groups on the roster. Davis would have been the fifth option on the interior if healthy.
Graham and Maliek Collins are the starters, and Cleveland has Adin Huntington and Mike Hall Jr. as the depth behind them.
Hall is dealing with an injury, but he was not placed on injured reserve, so it’s expected to be a week-to-week situation. If the Browns need more bodies on the interior, they can call up Sam Kamara to provide additional depth.
Losing Davis doesn’t change much about how the Browns line up on a weekly basis. Graham being back in the lineup is the bigger storyline, and the starting duo of Graham and Collins gives Cleveland a solid foundation in the middle of the defense.
Where it does sting a little is in the depth chart. With Hall banged up, the Browns are a bit thinner than they planned on being when they signed Davis in March. The interior of the defensive line takes a beating over the course of a full season, and having five capable bodies is a luxury most teams want by the time the weather turns in Cleveland.
Staying healthy up front is going to be key for the Browns as they try to continue to stack wins atop the AFC North in the second half of the season. Huntington, Hall, and potentially Kamara will all need to be ready when their numbers are called.
It’s unfortunate news for Davis, who won’t get a chance to show what he can do in a Browns uniform this year. For now, the Browns move forward with the group they have, and a move at the position down the road can be made if needed.
