The Buffalo Bills‘ defense is going to look dramatically different in 2026.

Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard will lead the Bills’ defensive unit under new head coach Joe Brady. And the franchise will hope those changes can spur a breakthrough late in the year. But for Buffalo and the rest of the NFL, there’s a looming mountain yet to climb: surviving the build-up to the season unscathed. And that is very much now up in the air for the Bills, who saw Chauncey Gardner-Johnson go down with an apparent lower leg injury at practice on Saturday. But there’s a glimmer of hope…

Injuries suck. Period. Training camp injuries are tough, too — as all of the NFL’s teams are just trying to get their guys conditioned and ready for the stress that’s going to come with playing games this fall. Gardner-Johnson’s a part of a new-look defense for the Bills, which makes his current unknown status that much more concerning.

The check of the injury required attention to the back of Gardner Johnson’s leg, where a potential Achilles injury may be. Such a development would, obviously, end his season and prove catastrophic. Hopefully that’s avoided — and Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins appears to have offered a glimmer of hope there.

“I walked up to him and I told him, you all right? Take care of yourself. Can you walk? And he got up and he did his thing. He could put weight on his legs so he can walk.
So we all know that injury is 100% in his league, but he’s all right. And I got the message from coaches that he’s all right, and they’re going to do the their protocol. He’ll get his whatever, like he has to get, he’ll be right back in the loop, but CJ is okay, but it’s a scary thing,” said Dawkins per Sal Capaccio of WGR550.

Gardner-Johnson’s body language on the cart wasn’t great — but then again he did walk himself (gingerly) to the cart itself. Keep your eyes peeled here, a bad outcome for Buffalo on this front would complicate things as Jim Leonhard gets this defense up to speed for the season.
