The Carolina Panthers announced several roster moves heading into Sunday night’s game against the Detroit Lions. The biggest one involves third-year wide receiver Xavier Legette, who was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

The IR designation means Legette will miss at least the next four games, including Sunday’s matchup with Detroit. Carolina has its bye in Week 5, so Legette will also be sidelined for Weeks 6-8 at minimum.

Xavier Legette’s knee injury derails a pivotal Year 3

Legette suffered a knee injury back in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons on a 55-yard reception just before halftime. It was a game-changing play for the Panthers that sparked the offense going into the break and helped fuel a massive victory over Atlanta.

Since then, it has been a frustrating stretch for the former first-round pick. Legette had an MRI the following Monday, has been out of practice the last two weeks, missed the Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns, and was already ruled out for Sunday night against the Lions. Now it’s official that he’ll be out for even longer.

This is a tough break for Legette, especially given the stakes he set for himself. On the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams, Legette called this a do-or-die season for him in Carolina.

It’s easy to see why he framed it that way. Legette has failed to live up to high expectations through his first two years with the Panthers. Carolina was hoping Year 3 would be the turning point that kickstarted his career and put him in position to earn a second contract with the team that drafted him in the first-round. Instead, he now faces a significant setback right in the middle of that proving ground.

Jalen Coker remains questionable for Sunday night, for now

There’s still no update on wide receiver Jalen Coker, who was questionable going into the weekend. That said, there’s one move worth noting. The Panthers elevated Ja’seem Reed from the practice squad, which head coach Dave Canales said Friday would happen if Coker was ruled out.

Still, there’s no official word on Coker’s status. Canales said the team would work him out Saturday and take the decision all the way up to game time Sunday night. Expect his status to become clear when inactives are announced 90 minutes before kickoff.

Losing both Legette and Coker would leave the Panthers thin at receiver for what has the potential to be a shootout against one of the league’s most explosive offenses.

Panthers add cornerback depth after losing both starters

Speaking of being thin. The Panthers also elevated cornerback Robert Rochelle from the practice squad to add depth to a cornerback room that has been hit hard. Earlier this week, Carolina placed both of its starting corners, Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, on injured reserve. Canales said the pair would be out into November at the earliest.

That leaves the following group to hold things down on the outside against Detroit’s high-powered offense:

Will Lee III (rookie), Akayleb Evans, Chau Smith-Wade, and Robert Rochelle (depth)

Rochelle was brought back onto the practice squad earlier this week and now gets the elevation for Sunday night. Clearly, this is a group that will be tested against the Lions.

Monroe Freeling clears concussion protocol

At least there’s some good news among Saturday’s news dump. Rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling, who dealt with a concussion throughout the week, has cleared protocol and is expected to start Sunday night.

That’s a big boost for Carolina’s offense. Keeping Freeling in the lineup gives quarterback Bryce Young the protection he needs in a game where the Panthers may have to keep pace on the scoreboard.

Still, the headline of the weekend is Legette landing on IR. Going into the start of October, the focus shifts to how long his knee takes to recover and whether he can salvage the season he said would define his future in Carolina. Time will tell.
