The Dallas Cowboys have an exciting battle brewing at tight end, if not multiple of them. And it’s all because of the talent at the position.

Jake Ferguson is on the same page as Dallas Cowboys fans are when it comes to one of the most exciting offseason battles there will be in 2026. And it’s all about his position group: tight end.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, Ferguson shared his take on the tight end room that just added two high-upside rookies. His comments set the table for a fun offseason.

Ferguson is bullish on Cowboys TE room

Asked about newcomers Michael Trigg and D.J. Rogers, the two most expensive undrafted free agency signings by the Cowboys this year, Ferguson admitted his excitement.

“It feels like I say this every year, but this is the best talent I’ve seen in this room,” Ferguson said at the Reliant Home Run Derby. “And that’s our job, help each other out wherever we need it.”

Ferguson added tight ends coach Lunda Wells is doing a great job getting the young guys ready.

In addition to Trigg and Rogers, Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford are expected to battle for the TE2 role behind Ferguson, who signed a $52 million contract extension in 2025.

Though Schoonmaker is a former second-round pick, Spann-Ford proved he belongs on the playing field in 2025. His blocking is only getting better and he’s shown he can be a consistent pass-catcher despite coming out of college with questions about a drop-heavy season.

Cowboys TE room overview

  • Jake Ferguson
  • Brevyn Spann-Ford
  • Luke Schoonmaker
  • Princeton Fant
  • Michael Trigg (undrafted free agent)
  • DJ Rogers (undrafted free agent)

In my way too early roster projection, I had Trigg making the team as a UDFA. The Cowboys aren’t afraid of letting undrafted rookies make the team, with Spann-Ford and Fant being recent examples.

What makes things even more exciting is Trigg and Rogers are very different, giving each a unique chance to make the team. Rogers is more of a traditional Y-tight end while Trigg projects as a big slot receiver. The latter spent most of his career unattached from the offensive line.

And while many will be quick to rule out Fant, he has some special teams experience that could keep him in the mix.

With a battle at TE2 and another at the bottom of the depth chart, tight end will be one of the most exciting positions of the offseason for the Cowboys. Hopefully, Ferguson is right about the group’s talent.
