Could Cowboys still trade for Jordyn Brooks? Dolphins expert offers very telling opinion as rumors come back
This would be one of the weirdest trades in recent NFL history. Does it actually make sense for the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins?
The Dallas Cowboys are up to something. Several times over the last week, Jerry and Stephen Jones have admitted they’re looking into the trade market. That includes Jerry telling reporters he spoke to an NFL owner about a trade idea potentially involving a “top pick.”
That’s left Cowboys fans, media, and content creators speculating about what trades the team could pursue. And the latest scenario proposed by 105.3 The Fan insider and former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus is a shocker.
In a radio segment on Friday, Broaddus said he believes Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks could be in the mix for the Cowboys. That’s an idea I loved earlier in the offseason, but one I thought was dead after the Dolphins signed Brooks to a $51.3 million contract extension.
Despite the deal, Broaddus believes the Dolphins could be open to exchange dead cap for draft capital as they rebuild for the future. It’s a bold idea, and one I struggle to see as a viable one. After all, I can’t remember a deal like that taking place in recent history. Brooks signed his deal on July 22!
So I thought it would be wise to reach out to our own A to Z Sports Miami’s Kyle Crabbs for his take on the whole situation. I love the idea of getting Brooks wearing the Star. But does this make sense at all?

Crabbs: Listen, I don’t doubt that the Dallas Cowboys would love to acquire Jordyn Brooks But I just can’t fathom this development. Miami, per reports, received plenty of trade calls about Jordyn Brooks in the offseason. At the time, Brooks was owed less than $8.5 million and entering into a contract year. Now, the Dolphins have since given him a $5 million dollar raise and the vast majority of that $8.5 million was combined with the new money to pay him a signing bonus north of $12 million.
Even if, as Broaddus suggests, the Dolphins are operating with “the blessing of Stephen Ross” to “absorb a bunch of cap”, the cost of acquiring Brooks now would be higher than it was before because Miami has paid out compensation. Eight figures of it. If the Cowboys weren’t offering a ‘Godfather’ trade package in April, May, and June, why should we believe they’ll meet a raised bar for Miami in hypothetical conversations?
And yes, the Dolphins have the blessing of Stephen Ross to do whatever is needed to clear the books and start fresh. They’ve already done it to the tune of $180 million dollars in dead cap. The “whispers” Broaddus referred to have been openly discussed here in South Florida for months.
Also openly talked about in South Florida for months? The team’s intention and desire to keep Jordyn Brooks on the roster. After Miami purged the roster, the only player they “sold” on was Jaylen Waddle — who garnered a 1st & 3rd round draft choice. Waddle, for what it’s worth, was NOT among the four “building blocks” Jon-Eric Sullivan referenced when he took the job in January.
Those four players were third-year tackle Patrick Paul, De’Von Achane (extended this offseason), center Aaron Brewer (extended this offseason), and… Brooks. Miami has spoken often this offseason about the value of Brooks, how they covet him as a player, and what he can do to help build a competitive culture for a team in a reset. The team’s Jacob Rodriguez selection doesn’t inhibit Brooks long-term, they’re intended to play together.
So my reaction to the rumors that the Miami Dolphins may be trading a linebacker to the Dallas Cowboys would be: ‘What number is Tyrel Dodson going to be wearing?’
Don’t expect Cowboys to land Brooks
I hate to say it, but Crabbs’ case makes itself. This trade scenario would be one of the weirdest deals in recent NFL history and honestly, the worst possible message to send the Dolphins fanbase.
What I will say is Broaddus is well connected, so him bringing it up seemingly out of nowhere is noteworthy.
That being said, I would like the idea of trading for Dodson. But I’m sure it’s not the big swing Cowboys fans are hoping for. Brooks, a first-time All-Pro in 2025, categorizes as a “big fish.” Dodson would be a solid addition, but he doesn’t move the needle nearly as much.
