Talk about a busy Thursday for the Dallas Cowboys front office! Perhaps they were bored by the 27-7 beatdown of the Los Angeles Rams in Australia?

All kidding askide, reports emerged on a pair of moves on Thursday night, and the second one caught some eyes. After locking up tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford to a 3-year contract extension, Dallas also extended wide receiver Ryan Flournoy to a 1-year deal worth $6 million, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The Cowboys’ commitment to Flournoy is not a surprise, but the timing of a deal certainly is.

Let’s break it down.

A short-term bet on a rising player

As of right now, this looks like a short-term bet that Flournoy is going to raise his value in 2026. Think about it: Flournoy, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, is entering the first season of his career as a projected starter.

His path to this point has been anything but conventional. In 2025, he was cut before the regular season, cleared waivers, and was brought back to the practice squad. By the end of the year, Flournoy had skyrocketed into the clear-cut No. 3 wide receiver on the Cowboys. He was getting plays called for him in the red zone, in high-leverage situations, on third down. The Cowboys loved his versatility.

They also got proof that he can rise as a No. 2 receiver. When CeeDee Lamb went down, Flournoy had a standout game against the New York Jets. He followed that up with another big performance against the Detroit Lions late in the season, finishing 2025 with two 100-plus-yard games, 475 total receiving yards, and four touchdowns. All after getting only five targets in the first four weeks and going targetless in multiple weeks throughout the year.

Why the timing makes sense

The extension gives Dallas control over Flournoy through 2027. Because he was cut in 2025, he was no longer on his original rookie contract, making this deal necessary to keep him in the fold beyond this season. 

The move is also a smart insurance policy. George Pickens is only signed through 2026 after being named the Cowboys’ franchise tag player earlier this offseason. If Pickens departs after this season, Flournoy’s role could grow significantly. Locking him in now, before a potential breakout year inflates his price tag, is the kind of forward-thinking roster management Dallas doesn’t always get credit for.

The Cowboys opened $19 million in cap space last week by restructuring the deals of three players. Many speculated that room could be earmarked for a trade, perhaps for someone like Max Crosby. Instead, Dallas has focused on extending complementary starters: Spann-Ford (the No. 2 tight end) and now Flournoy (the No. 3 wide receiver). Not blockbuster names, but foundational pieces.

Flournoy’s opportunity in 2026

If you look at the Cowboys’ offense heading into 2026, Flournoy has a chance to really shine. Dallas returns 11 starters, but the biggest area for improvement may come from the receiver room, specifically from Flournoy. Last year, the No. 3 receiver role was a revolving door between Jalen Tolbert and a mix of other players early on. Now it’s Flournoy’s show.

An improvement in the passing game is expected largely because of him. Defenses will be focused on Pickens and Lamb week after week, which should create plenty of one-on-one opportunities for Flournoy to make the most of his targets.

That’s what makes this a win-win. Flournoy gets more money now, and the Cowboys lock up a player they believe in for one more year at a reasonable price, right before he has a real chance to prove he’s worth far more. It’s a savvy play by Dallas, and if Flournoy takes the next step this season, it could end up being one of the better under-the-radar moves of the offseason.
