A new NFL rule creates a very specific problem for Lions star Brian Branch
Three qualifying player-safety violations in one season now mean an automatic one-game suspension, and Branch’s career fine history shows why Detroit has reason to pay attention.
Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch has a problem, and the NFL’s new joint statement with the NFLPA just made it a whole lot more urgent. The league announced that any player who commits three violations in a single season across specific categories will be suspended for a game. Those categories include hip drop tackles, horse collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks. Players who commit only one violation will receive 50% of their fine.
For Branch, who has racked up $164,777 in fines sine his rookie season, this new policy should be a wake-up call.
Branch’s fine history is a red flag
You have to understand why this matters so much for the Lions’ star safety. In 2025, Branch was fined twice for impermissible use of the helmet and once for a hit on a defenseless receiver. Had these new rules been in effect last season, Branch would have already been suspended for a game.
It doesn’t stop there. Go back to 2024 and it’s the same story. You’ll find a helmet-to-helmet fine, a hip drop tackle fine and a hit on a defenseless player fine. He would have missed a game int he last two seasons.
In 2023 he got called for two helmet to helmets and a horse collar tackle.
That is three consecutive seasons of multiple fines for dangerous hits in which he would have been suspended for a game had the rule been in effect. That’s insane.
What this means for Detroit
Brian Branch is a great player. There is no doubt about it. He’s one of the most talented safeties in the NFL, and the Lions need him on the field. But he has a documented issue with these types of violations, and the league just put a hard consequence in place for repeat offenders.
The concern for Detroit is simple: you never know when that third violation could come. If Branch picks up two fines early in the season and then gets hit with a third in December, the Lions could lose him for a game that matters. A suspension in Week 15 or during a playoff push is a completely different situation than one in September.
Three strikes and you’re out for a game. That’s the new reality.
Branch has to clean it up
When Branch comes back this season, he has to make a conscious effort to avoid these penalties. The Lions can’t afford to lose him at a critical moment because of preventable infractions. His aggressive style is part of what makes him so effective, but he has to find a way to play within the new boundaries the league just established.
Let’s see if he can do it. The talent has never been the question with Branch. The discipline is what needs to catch up.
