We learned something big about the Detroit Lions on Thursday. That's that they are a zero tolerance franchise and they aren't going to look the other way like some other franchises have.
The Lions released cornerback Cameron Sutton the day after the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office released that they have put a warrant out for Sutton for domestic battery by strangulation and that they have been trying to find him for the last two weeks. Like the rest of the public, the Lions also found out about this on Wednesday.
In a league where teams are currently rostering players that have been accused of sexual assault and domestic battery, the Lions are showing that they are not a team that will stand by that. If you do something like Sutton allegedly did, you don't deserve to play for the Lions. Really you don't deserve to play in the NFL at all, but again, some teams will look past that.
What Sutton allegedly did to this woman (who's identity has not been released) is horrible and it has no place in this world let alone in the NFL or the Lions franchise. It's made it only worse by the fact that Sutton has decided to go on the run and disappear.
This doesn't fit the culture that the Lions are building. That culture, from what I've been able to see, is about a group of men that are all about family, community and doing the job with honor and pride. Sutton broke that code and he broke other codes that are much worse and far more important that the code of a football team.
The Lions also said a lot more if you really think about it. They're saying that they're a team that stands by victims of abuse and that they're a team that stands by women. Again, that's something that we haven't seen a lot of in this league and it's refreshing to see it happen in Detroit.
