The Lions are running out of cornerback trade options, but there’s one team Brad Holmes should be watching closely
Tampa Bay and Los Angeles appear reluctant to sell as the Nov. 10 deadline approaches, but Indianapolis may still decide to move pieces — and it has two corners Detroit should ask about.
The Detroit Lions picked up a big win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. With that out of the way, it’s time to get back to the NFL trade deadline talk, because the deadline is right around the corner and the Lions still have a cornerback question to answer.
Right before the Week 7 games kicked off, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler posted on Twitter about what he’s hearing on a few teams that everyone around the league is watching ahead of the deadline. Three of those teams matter a lot to Detroit, so let’s go through them.
The Buccaneers aren’t selling
Start with Tampa Bay. Everyone has been talking about Buccaneers cornerback Zyon McCollum. I’ve talked about him. I know Lions fans want him.
Our own Bucs beat writer Evan Winter joined our show a few weeks ago and said there was no way the Bucs would entertain trading McCollum unless someone made them a strong offer. Fowler’s report backs that up. He reported that the Buccaneers still feel like they’re in the NFC South race, and that makes them less likely to make a trade.
Fowler did note that a Week 7 loss might have changed things and opened the door to trade talks. That didn’t happen. The Bucs picked up an impressive win over the Carolina Panthers and are still very much in the division race.
I don’t see the Lions making a trade with Tampa Bay unless the wheels fall off for the Bucs over the next two weeks.
The Chargers are standing pat
This one is a little surprising, but it probably shouldn’t be. Fowler reported that the Chargers, who are 0-6, are standing pat. They don’t want to trade anybody.
I know Lions fans don’t want to hear that. A lot of the names I hear connected to Detroit play for Los Angeles. Tarheeb Still, Cam Hart, and Donte Jackson all fit that bill. The Chargers aren’t playing well, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for them.
Still, the decision makes sense. Still and Hart are both young players in the 24-to-25-year-old range. Those are guys you build around, not guys you sell off.
Jackson might still be a possibility. However, he’s dealing with a hamstring injury. We’ll see if he even plays on the other side of the Chargers’ Week 7 bye.
Either way, you might have to stop thinking about the Chargers.
The Colts are the team to watch
Here’s the team you can think about. Fowler reported that people around the league expect the Colts to wait another week or two before deciding which direction they want to go at the deadline.
Sauce Gardner isn’t someone the Lions should even think about. We’ve already gone over that, and he shouldn’t be a target for Detroit.
Cam Taylor-Britt is a different story. The Lions have had real interest in him before. They brought him in for a pre-draft visit ahead of his draft. He’s played fairly well in Indianapolis. He doesn’t start there, but he could start for the Lions. He could absolutely be a part of what they want to do on defense.
Charvarius Ward is another name I’d at least ask about. He’s ahead of Taylor-Britt on the depth chart and would obviously cost more, but if Indianapolis really decides to start moving pieces, I don’t see any reason for the Lions not to make that call too.
What would it cost? I think you could probably get Taylor-Britt for a fifth- or sixth-round pick, leaning more toward the sixth. I might even say a seventh-round pick gets it done.
If you’re hoping the Lions make a trade, Indianapolis is the team to keep an eye on right now.
The NFL trade deadline is a little more than two weeks away on Nov. 10. We’ll see where it goes. Right now, the options for the Lions to trade for a cornerback keep dwindling. If Detroit can’t pull something off with the Colts, I honestly don’t know what the plan is.
It’s not looking too hot right now. Let’s see what Brad Holmes has up his sleeve.
