The Lions’ first injury report for Buffalo looks scary in exactly the wrong place — but Detroit planned for this, updates on Blake Miller and Christian Mahogany
Three Detroit offensive linemen landed on Monday’s estimated report ahead of Thursday night, putting the depth Brad Holmes rebuilt this offseason to an immediate test.
The Detroit Lions just won their Week 1 meeting in overtime against the New Orleans Saints, and now, at breakneck speed, they’re jumping right into planning for the Buffalo Bills on Thursday.
A troubling injury report for the Lions’ offensive line
On Monday, the Lions put out a worrisome practice report that featured rookie right tackle Blake Miller, left guard Christian Mahogany, and center Juice Scruggs all either missing practice or being limited in practice.
Here’s the thing: this is an estimated report. The Lions didn’t really practice on Monday. They held a walkthrough. So there could be no problems at all.
Campbell’s comments on the injuries
The good news is that Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to the media after the report, and we got some updates.
Campbell says Miller’s injury is a little bit of a concern. He did say that there’s a chance Miller will play Thursday, but they won’t know until closer to the game. He did say that the Lions would know more on Tuesday.
As far as Mahogany goes, Campbell had this to say:
“Mahogany got that little injury here. You know, I don’t think this is something serious long term, but it could be tough, you know, to get him ready for Thursday. So, you know, that’s one thing there, but like I said, we got Bartch in there, and Juice and Frazier, and, you know, we keep going here a little bit, Borom, and so, you know, we’ll be good.”
As far as Scruggs goes, you can see that Campbell mentions him there, so that pretty much tells you that his injury is not a major concern in terms of whether or not he can play Thursday.
This is why the Lions got more depth this offseason
I mean, this was the big point of the offseason, right? The Lions wanted to make sure they got deeper and upgraded spots. If Miller can’t go, you’re not putting Giovanni Manu out there. You’re putting Larry Borom, who has plenty of starting experience, in the game. You already know you have the veteran in Bartch, who played plenty on Sunday and played fairly well aside from a bad penalty late in the game. The Lions are definitely a deeper team than they were before.
