The Hall of Fame game was not a good night for the Detroit Lions. Even more so, it was not a good night for former third-round pick Hendon Hooker. He finished the night going just 3-6 for 18 yards and an interception. The good thing for his case is that Kyle Allen didn’t do much better.

The other good thing is that Hooker is going to get a big chance to redeem himself on Friday night when he gets the start in the Lions’ second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Hooker needs to have a good night to get his chance to be the QB2 of this team. Dan Campbell believes that in order to do that, he just needs to string some good things together and help himself out mentally.

“…I think of Hooker as just keep diving into the work, keep getting the reps and he just needs some small victories. He just needs a few wins here just to stack some back-to-back reps, back-to-back days and I think that’s going to do him wonders. Look, he’s working, he grinds at it, he’s very coachable, he certainly has the ability. He’s going to get his opportunity. I already said he’s starting this week and we’re going to give him a load here and see what he can do with it.”

Campbell says he has seen some improvements from Hooker in certain areas. He said he’s doing better at getting the plays in, seeing coverage, and getting checks, but he needs to clean up some of the communication errors and inaccuracies. Above all, he just needs to have some good things happen to him, and then he needs to stack those good things. Then he can mentally feel like everything is going the right way.

If Monday is any indication, he can put that on the bottom of the Jenga tower and start stacking on top of it, because he looked strong in practice. Specifically against pressure. An area he’s struggled with in the past. Let’s see if he stacks.
