‘Whoever’s saying that is not highly intelligent’ Alex Anzalone fires back at Lions fans after overreacting to tough Week 1 loss
It’s not lost on anyone that the Detroit Lions had a rough Week 1, and nobody is going to say otherwise. There were not a lot of positives to take from this game. With that said, the overreactions from Lions fans were at an all-time high on Sunday night, and it felt like something we’ve […]
It’s not lost on anyone that the Detroit Lions had a rough Week 1, and nobody is going to say otherwise. There were not a lot of positives to take from this game. With that said, the overreactions from Lions fans were at an all-time high on Sunday night, and it felt like something we’ve never seen before.
Fans wanted Aidan Hutchinson out; they’re already making a ruling on Jared Goff without Ben Johnson, the season is fully over already, some people were talking about the first pick in the draft, and then the big one, firing everyone. People were saying they wanted John Morton fired after the first game, and there were even some calls to fire Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone was asked about this stuff, and he had a pretty straightforward response.
“After Week 1? Well, whoever’s saying that is not highly intelligent.” Anzalone said. “…This isn’t a situation where anyone’s panicking. It’s just, we’re on the road, we got our expletive beat and we gotta move on.”
He’s right. That was a really bad game, but it was also one game, and it was the first game of the season that’s not going to end until January. It is way too early to be crashing out like this. Honestly, Lions fans shouldn’t be crashing out at all with this team. It’s not 2015 anymore. This is a good roster and a good coaching staff that got caught with their pants down on a bad day. Saying that everyone needs to go after Week 1 is just insane.
We all get how this works by now, though. There is the initial freakout where all nuances are non-existent and everything is bad. Then it’s a night of sleep, and people are more likely to allow the nuance in to understand what went wrong. Then they do, and they get less mad. Then the Lions have a strong week of practice, and by Friday, everyone has a cooler head and things are normal. I urge everyone not to crash out so quickly, and then I urge the people opposite of that to not spend so much of their lives trying to convince the crash-outs that things aren’t as bad as they think they are.
