Packers keep betting on Christian Watson with another extension, and his progress as an offensive weapon helps explain why
Watson signed a four-year, $110.5 million deal with the Packers. That happens one year after he signed a short-term extension
The Green Bay Packers are keeping the offensive core together for the long run. On Thursday, the Packers reached a contract extension agreement with wide receiver Christian Watson. The value is below what Alec Pierce got, but it’s still a massive upgrade for the player: $110.5 million ($27.625 million per year), with $31 million in full guarantees via a signing bonus.
In September, while Watson was still recovering from a torn ACL, the Packers gave Watson a one-year extension. Now, the team rewards his progress, keeping him under contract through 2030.
That’s the second wide receiver the Packers extended this offseason, after giving Jayden Reed a three-year deal in the middle of the draft. With Matthew Golden and Savion Williams under contract through 2028 (and a fifth-year option for Golden in 2029), the Packers make sure to establish their long-term wide receiver room.
Production and health
Early in his career, Christian Watson suffered with multiple hamstring injuries and failed to establish himself as a high-end weapon. Last year, though, the weapon took a noticeable leap. After returning in the middle of the season, Watson showed no signs of limitations.
In just 10 games, he had 35 catches for 611 yards and six touchdowns. Extrapolating those numbers for a 17-game season, Watson produced like a 59-catch, 1,038-yard, 10-touchdown wide receiver in 2026.
More than his individual production, Watson makes the entire offense better because of his ability to stretch the field and stress defenses both vertically and horizontally.
Choices at WR
The Packers drafted six wide receivers over a two-year span in 2022 and 2023. Four of them panned out, but it was impossible to keep them all after the rookie contract. So, the Packers utilized the 2026 offseason to make the final decisions.
Earlier this year, the Packers allowed Romeo Doubs to walk in free agency and traded away Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, they extended Jayden Reed and Christian Watson.
Those are effectively the best and most talented players of the bunch, and the Packers are banking on their upside to keep the offense afloat for years to come alongside quarterback Jordan Love.
