The Green Bay Packers beat the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders in impressive fashion to start the 2025 regular season. But don’t think that head coach Matt LaFleur is satisfied with what he has seen from the offense so far.

Despite the 27 points in each of the first two games of the season, LaFleur wants more consistency from his unit, which seems fair after Thursday night’s game was certainly closer than it should have been.

“For the majority of the game, there were a lot of mistakes out there that we have got to clean up between penalties, some miscues, some mishaps,” Matt LaFleur said after the game. “Offensively, it was kind of feast or famine a little bit. Too many three-and-outs. And then having opportunities where, for whatever reason, whether it’s a call or just not executing or doing things to put us in a bad situation. But I think there’s opportunities that we need to capitalize on if we want to become the team that I think we need to become.”

Explosiveness is part of it

Since Jordan Love became the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2023, the offense has pretty much lived like that. The consistency has been an issue, but at the same time that the unit has an absurd capacity to generate explosive plays.

If you are familiar with advanced stats, you will understand this concept: The Packers’ offense is always better in EPA/play, which measures efficiency, than it is in success rate, which is more based on play-by-play consistency.

“I know that we rely on some big plays, but I think most good offenses do as well,” LaFleur explained. “We’ve got to be a little bit more consistent in some of those critical situations, making sure that we execute. I know we had a couple of busted protections where we didn’t capitalize on some of the pressure that they were bringing. I didn’t think all in all, just in some of those situations, that we did a good enough job.”

Now, the Packers will have 10 days before the third game of the season, against the Cleveland Browns. Hopefully for LaFleur and the offense, the two starting offensive linemen who missed the game against the Commanders will be back — right tackle Zach Tom and left guard Aaron Banks. Ideally, those two pieces will help Green Bay achieve more balance throughout the year. On the other hand, wide receiver Jayden Reed being out for several weeks will inevitably be a problem.
