Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed the media following Thursday's OTA practice.
Among the questions he fielded was an update on the progress of 2025 first-round draft pick Josh Simmons. The former Ohio State left tackle has been rehabbing from a torn patellar tendon in his left knee since October.
"You know what he's, doing a nice job," Reid said. "We weren't sure quite how much we were going to be able to get out of him, but he looks strong. He's been jumping in and taking the team reps now, he was just doing the individual stuff before. You can definitely see the talent. He's got to keep learning, and learning the stuff that Andy's (offensive line coach Andy Heck) teaching him fundamentally and technique wise. He (Simmons) sure has a good attitude about it."
Multiple people within the Chiefs organization have stated that Simmons seems to be ahead of schedule in his recovery, and Reid's statement reflects that sentiment. The fact that Simmons was able to participate in some team drills instead of working off to the side is very encouraging.
The Chiefs will wrap up OTAs on Friday and head into mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Minicamp will give us an even better picture on not only if Simmons still has any restrictions, but if he or Jaylon Moore is working with the starting offensive line unit.
Whoever is getting work with the first team offense during minicamp could enter training camp as the starter in late July. As long as Simmons is healthy, he and Moore should split reps as starters until one of them begins to separate themselves as the better player. Whoever doesn't win the starting job will likely serve as the team's swing tackle in 2025.
