Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid just revealed what really happened to kicker Harrison Butker vs. the Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos just beat the Kansas City Chiefs, and Harrison Butker’s missed field goal certainly didn’t help.
The Kansas City Chiefs need to have better performances from their special teams. And that’s no bold statement. You have probably heard head coach Andy Reid say that himself. But the fact is, they really need Harrison Butker to be better.
Last week against the Seahawks, he was terrible. He missed a few kicks and was massively short on a 58-yarder. So, the Chiefs tried to give him a mental boost, light a fire under the guy. They brought on Justin Tucker to the practice squad. And that didn’t have as big an impact. In the rain late in the game, Butker still missed. However, Reid isn’t blaming Butker.
Denver just played it very well.
Andy Reid talks Butker missed field goal vs. Broncos
“So, and then special teams-wise, I know (K Harrison) Butker is the topic,” Reid said on Monday. “And I would tell you, I could see what he saw on that, as far as he ended up going too far right, but I see why he went right, too. We never talk about the protection on that and the overloads and that, but when you have a heavy overload on the left side and penetration there, that’s going to alter a kicker. That’s just what you do as a kicker.
“It’s no different than what quarterbacks do when they’re throwing the football. So sometimes you have to alter the alignment there. So, I get it, it just went a little bit too wide on it, but we’ve got to do a better job of that, of the protection for him there… Yeah, they overloaded that side with all their bigs, and they were able to collapse us a little bit there. So, he just adjusted to the right a little bit, but it tailed on there, so.”
Butker is 12/18 on the year and has missed one extra point. He has the most missed kicks in the NFL since last season started, with 16. So, regardless of who was prepared, Butker still needs to be better.
