The Kansas City Chiefs acted quickly after fourth-year OT Wanya Morris requested a trade from the team.

According to reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs have agreed to trade Morris to the Atlanta Falcons. A source tells A to Z Sports the deal will send Morris and a 7th-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft to the Falcons for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick. So, the Chiefs pair Morris and a future pick to move up on Day 3 of the 2027 NFL Draft.

Morris was a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. He made 16 starts in 3 seasons with the team. He was entering the final year of his rookie deal with Kansas City. With OT Esa Pole and rookie OT Kahlil Benson taking starting repetitions at right tackle during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, the writing was on the wall for Morris. He was seemingly not in their plans after going from reliable depth for Kansas City to a liability in short order. He’ll have an opportunity to play in Atlanta in 2026. Meanwhile, the Chiefs recoup draft capital and a small amount of cap space ($1.4 million) by trading Morris.

  • Round 2
  • Round 3
  • Round 3 (via Rams for Trent McDuffie)
  • Round 4
  • Round 5
  • Round 6 (via Falcons for Wanya Morris)
  • Round 7 (via Jets for Derrick Nnadi)

Chiefs’ decision to trade Wanya Morris confirms quiet confidence in offensive tackle depth

The irony here is that, heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, the Chiefs had everyone convinced they would select an offensive tackle early. Sure enough, they sit here in June with a surplus of talent, and three-way competition for a starting role at right tackle.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke a bit about that battle after mandatory minicamp wrapped up. He appears to be very comfortable with each of Jaylon Moore, Esa Pole, and Kahlil Benson.

“Yeah, so (Jaylon) Moore has been kind of the mainstay in there, and then we’ve moved guys in there, and we’ll just see,” Reid said on Thursday. “We’ll see what happens. Those other four spots are really pretty solid, and I feel good whichever one of these guys wins the competition there. I think we’ve got guys that will be ok in that’ll be ok in that position. It’s just a matter of who ends up being that guy.”

That doesn’t even include the other developmental depth they have at tackle with Chu Godrick and Ethan Driskell. As things currently stand, this position group is loaded. However, as we all know, things can change quickly in the NFL throughout training camp and the preseason. Still, this quiet confidence from Kansas City is a great thing, especially knowing that all four other starting offensive line positions are held by quality players.
