Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives injury updates on CB Mansoor Delane, WR Rashee Rice as mandatory minicamp wraps
Andy Reid has revealed rookie CB Mansoor Delane’s injury status after he missed both mandatory minicamp practices. He also provided an update on WR Rashee Rice, who is currently rehabbing a knee injury while in jail.
The Kansas City Chiefs officially wrapped up mandatory minicamp on Thursday, June 11.
The final day of mandatory minicamp is always a mock-up of the conditioning test the team will go through at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, in July. It typically consists of the guys doing 15 half-gassers, back-to-back.
As the Chiefs shift gears toward a time for rest, relaxation, and recovery, Coach Andy Reid provided some injury-related updates. One of those updates came straight from mandatory minicamp, while another came from a player who was unable to participate.

Mystery behind Chiefs CB Mansoor Delane’s absence from mandatory minicamp practices revealed
The No. 6 overall pick, Chiefs rookie CB Mansoor Delane, missed mandatory minicamp practices with an undisclosed injury. He was still in the building and at practice, but not participating.
Delane was spotted on the sidelines at each practice session without a helmet. That was the first positive sign. Had he been inside during practice, it would typically indicate a more severe injury. Delane was also seen doing some footwork drills on the sideline. That was an early indicator that his injury was an upper-body one.
On Thursday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that Delane is dealing with a shoulder injury.
“Yeah, so (Mansoor) Delane hurt his shoulder,” Reid said. “And so we kept him out of practice for that reason.”
It’s unclear when Delane sustained the injury. He did participate in OTAs, so the logical conclusion is then. However, Reid seemed rather optimistic about the rookie’s readiness for training camp.
“Yeah, he should be ready for it,” Reid said.
An update on WR Rashee Rice… from behind bars
Rashee Rice was not at the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp. He is serving a 30-day jail sentence for violating the conditions of his probation. Rice is also rehabbing from a debridement surgery on his previously injured knee.
Andy Reid was asked about the team’s communication with Rice. It comes following news that he would be allowed to rehab his knee injury while locked up. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder has spoken with Rice. The goal is to ensure he has everything he needs to do the rehab work while in jail.
“So, Rick (Burkholder) has talked to him more than what I have,” Reid said. “And just making sure that everything was set there where he could do some rehab with it and still do the time that he needed, take care of. And so he’s on top of that, and thank goodness that they’re allowing him to do it, so it’s they’ve been, they’ve been great with that.”
Asked if he felt that Rice would be ready for training camp, Reid gave a positive update. Ultimately, it depends on how Rice attacks the weeks after his release and leading up to training camp in July.
“I think he will be,” Reid said. “I mean, he gets out here somewhere this next week, and so we’ll see where it goes from there, and he’ll be back up here and working.”
