Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice isn’t in attendance for the team’s first week of OTAs because he’s serving a 30-day jail sentence. He won’t be at the second week of OTAs or mandatory minicamp either. This came after he violated the terms and conditions of his probation, which he was serving after a guilty plea on his Dallas street-racing crash in March of 2024.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to the media on Thursday, May 28, and addressed the situation with Rice for the first time.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid speaks on Rashee Rice’s OTAs absence and what comes next for the troubled receiver

Andy Reid has been known throughout his career as a coach to give his players chances to learn from the mistakes they’ve made in life. It appears that the team will take the same approach with Rice, based on Reid’s comments. It’s full steam ahead and catch-up mode for Rice once he’s back with the team.

“As far as Rashee (Rice) goes, we’re aware of the situation,” Reid began. “The league’s aware of it. We’ve talked to the league; we get it. And as far as any further due to that, there’s been no talk about anything further. We’re moving forward just normal as we go here, you know. When he gets back, we’ve got to get him caught up in doing what he needs to do. And then make sure he gets it; it’s not an easy thing he’s going through, so life lessons are important. We’re all given chances to learn, and he’s in that position now.”

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice 2025 Stats & Pace

The Chiefs still have a strong belief that Rice can be a top receiver in the league when he’s on the field. Had he played a full season in 2025, he was on pace for his first 1,000-yard and 10-touchdown season.

  • 8 games in 2025: 53 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns.
  • 17-game pace in 2025: 113 catches for 1,213 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The other aspect of it is making sure that Rice understands and grasps the lesson here. Based on how things have gone to this point in his career, that’s a big part of this, and whether or not he’ll see on-field success moving forward.

Will Chiefs WR Rashee Rice face any additional discipline from the NFL?

There has been some speculation that Rice’s probation violation could trigger the league’s personal conduct policy once more. Rice was suspended for six games at the start of the 2025 NFL season as a result of his past actions that earned him probation in the first place. Coach Reid does not yet know whether Rice will face additional discipline.

“Yeah, I mean, we don’t know that,” Reid told reporters. “I know he’s done some things already that he’s got to take care of, so we’re given to him, but I don’t.. I haven’t heard anything. No, we’re kind of moving forward.”

The Chiefs seem to be content to roll with the punches in this particular situation. If another suspension occurs, they’ll be prepared for it. The hope, however, is that on the other end of his 30 days in jail, Rice will be on the straight and narrow through the 2026 NFL season.
