As the clock ticks down ahead of free agency, the entire Chiefs Kingdom anxiously awaits news on star DT Chris Jones.

Absent a contract extension by 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday, Jones would be on the open market when the legal tampering period officially begins. Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Thursday and provided a brief update on contract negotiations with Jones.

"Yeah, well, not a whole lot to share," Reid said. "We'd love to have him back. Brett Veach and his gang are working through that. Chris Shea works with our cap and does the contracts. So they're all working through this thing. They've had great communication. So, we'll just see where it goes from here."

Eisen asked Andy Reid about Jones' cryptic tweet from earlier in the day, and Reid seemed to interpret it as an encouraging sign.

"Well, that could be taken a couple of different ways," Reid said. "But I like the dot, dots."

"Meaning more to come?" Eisen asked.

"I'm hoping, Rich," Reid said. "I can't give you anything because I don't have a whole lot. I'm doing all these media things, so maybe something is going better than I think it is."

The truth is, Reid is not as in the loop on these things as he previously has been in the past. He has full trust in Brett Veach and his staff to handle things such as contract negotiations and he doesn't get involved more than he has to be involved.

As far as the cryptic tweet from Jones, Reid told Eisen about the photo and explained how that moment came to be after Super Bowl LVIII.

"The whole story behind that. Chris Jones pushed himself past the point he thought he could push himself, and I was so proud of him for that. When we went into overtime, he was exhausted. He had worked so hard during the game and he had a lot of snaps. He took himself to that next level. He was on the sideline at the time, and he was bent over. I told him, 'Hey, you have a minute and 52 seconds. Let's go! You can do it for a minute and 52 seconds.' He went out there and had a huge third-down play for us. So I found him bent over in the endzone in a catcher's position when I was going to do the media part of it and so I pushed him over and I jumped on his chest. . . I was so happy for him. He's a guy who has been here a long time. I'm close to the kid. I was so proud of him. . ."

Needless to say, there's a lot of love between Reid and Jones. Hopefully, that plays a part in facilitating a contract extension in the coming days.
