Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to overreact to Rashee Rice news with an A.J. Brown trade or a free agent signing quite yet
Rashee Rice is back in the headlines again for the wrong reasons, but the Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to overreact to that news with a trade or free agent signing quite yet.
Rashee Rice has thrown another wrench into the Kansas City Chiefs’ plans at the wide receiver position, but they shouldn’t be too quick to overreact.
Rice violated the terms of his probation and got thrown in jail. He also had a recent cleanup surgery on his knee. Now, he won’t be able to participate in OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and he’ll also be forced to rehab his knee injury while incarcerated. It’s a bad situation that does nothing to help his standing with the team. Unreliability has become the story of Rice’s NFL career.
With uncertainty surrounding Rice’s situation, the Chiefs face both short- and long-term decisions at the wide receiver position. Ever since the news on Rice broke, there have been calls across social media for the team to add another receiver. Even with further proof of Rice’s unreliability, Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ decision-makers likely won’t be quick to jump into anything.
Don’t believe the Chiefs-A.J. Brown trade interest rumors floating around on social media
There are quite a few aggregated posts floating around that have twisted Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer’s words regarding a hypothetical trade for Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown. He didn’t say the Chiefs were interested in making a trade. Quite the opposite, actually.
“…Do they circle back and maybe look at the idea of trading for A.J. Brown? I don’t think that happens,” Breer said. “They had that opportunity. They were on A.J. Brown’s list. They said no to the Eagles in the first place, but I think if you’re the Chiefs, you have to look at all these things going forward, because Rashee Rice clearly looks like somebody that you have not been able to rely on.”
His take is measured and reasonable: The Chiefs have to explore all options on the table because Rice has proven to be unreliable.
Why the Chiefs will likely wait on a free agent signing
As things currently stand, the Chiefs have 13 receivers (including Rice) on the 90-man offseason roster. They don’t lack for depth. With OTAs and mandatory minicamp coming up, those players deserve a shot to impress. From there, if Andy Reid and Brett Veach determine they need to add a player, that’s when I think things will ramp up.
The other aspect to consider is that the Chiefs need salary cap space (roughly $7 million) just to finish signing their draft class. They’ll need more to sign a free agent or trade for a player and hand them a big contract. If you see the team start to extend players or restructure contracts to free up salary cap space, it will signal that a move is likely in the near future.
Top free agent wide receivers available for the Chiefs
While former Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is available in free agency, it doesn’t make sense to sign him until he’s healthy and recovered from his knee injury. He suffered a left knee dislocation with a torn ACL and other torn ligaments on Sept. 29 of 2025. Here are four other free agents currently on the market:
- Keenan Allen
- Stefon Diggs
- Deebo Samuel
- DeAndre Hopkins
There’s also a chance this could be the wake-up call Rice needs. Sitting in jail for 30 days, unable to rehab his knee injury properly, could be a very sobering situation. I would like to think he grasps the gravity of the situation and can turn the corner heading into the season. Will the Chiefs be willing to bet on that? Time will tell the story there.
