Kansas City Chiefs host 2 tryout players at mandatory minicamp — and it’s a quiet admission of Brett Veach’s offseason oversight

Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach didn’t invest much in the tight end position this offseason. They’ve now brought in Kenny Yeboah and Mason Pline for tryouts at mandatory minicamp in what feels like an admission of neglect.

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting a pair of tryout players at mandatory minicamp from June 9 through June 11. The position group of those two players is a quiet admission of an offseason oversight from GM Brett Veach.

As first reported by Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick, the Chiefs are hosting tight ends Kenny Yeboah and Mason Pline on tryouts.

Yeboah is listed at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds. He’s a former undrafted free agent out of Temple and Ole Miss from the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons in the league with the New York Jets. He appeared in 33 games with two starts across those seasons, recording nine receptions on 15 targets for 111 yards and one touchdown. Yeboah spent last year with the Detroit Lions, but an injury ended his tenure with the team before it truly began.

Pline is a former 2022 undrafted free agent out of Furman, who has spent time with both the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. He’s listed at 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds. He’s not appeared in an NFL regular-season game to this point in his career. He has appeared in four preseason games, but recorded no stats.

The Chiefs didn’t invest enough in the tight end room this offseason and are scrambling to improve after early injuries

It’s becoming quickly apparent that Brett Veach didn’t do enough to reinforce the depth in the tight end room this offseason. The only new addition was UDFA John Michael Gyllenborg. However, he’s not been on the field due to injury. Given the injury history in this room with Jared Wiley’s knee injury and Jake Briningstool missing the entire 2025 season, it feels like a pretty big oversight.

Chiefs’ 2026 Tight End Room

The Chiefs only have six tight ends on the 90-man offseason roster. That’s fairly consistent with the numbers they’ve had in the past two seasons.

  • Travis Kelce
  • Noah Gray
  • Jared Wiley
  • Tre Watson
  • Jake Briningstool
  • John Michael Gyllenborg

During OTAs, both Jake Briningstool and Gyllenborg were absent with undisclosed injuries. Travis Kelce’s absence from that voluntary work created an opportunity for second-year man Tre Watson. However, they had only three players participating in open media practices: Watson, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley.

Perhaps the auditions for Yeboah and Pline are nothing more than a way to get a few extra bodies in the building for mandatory minicamp. Yet it feels like the neglect of this position group could quickly spiral out of control.

Kelce turns 37 in October of 2026. Gray is coming off perhaps his worst season as a professional. The jury is still out on Wiley. Briningstool was promising, but injuries are becoming a trend. Watson could quietly become someone who pushes for a roster spot. Gyllenborg still isn’t practicing at mandatory minicamp. He feels like he might be more of a mystery-injured reserve stash at this point.

Tight end truly feels like it could be the next position group that Veach could seek to improve after signing CB L’Jarius Sneed. Whether it’s Yeboah, Pline, or someone else entirely remains to be seen.
