The Kansas City Chiefs could be making a big move soon with their franchise QB based on one NFL expert's prediction.
The Kansas City Chiefs have the luxury of having the greatest quarterback in the league, and possibly a guy that can battle for the title of greatest of all time. They also have the luxury of playing him on what will be the second year of his monster contract that he signed three years ago.
At the time, he was the highest-paid player in the league annually. Now, he is still up there, but he isn't the highest. That's just how the market works. After Lamar Jackson signed his extension, among a few other quarterbacks getting huge deals since some people seem to think the Chiefs would like to re-claim that top spot of Mahomes being the highest paid.
PFT's Mike Florio is a guy that thinks the Chiefs will be making a big move soon involving their quarterback. Here is what he said in his latest article:
Chiefs G.M. Brett Veach already has vowed to address the Mahomes deal after more quarterback contracts are completed. While Veach didn’t delve into any specifics, here’s what reasonably should be expected, based on our conversations with folks aware of the dynamics of the situation. Expect Mahomes, before the season begins, to once again be the highest-paid player in league history. The details will be interesting, and subject to differing interpretations. Because Mahomes has nine years left on his current contract, a new-money APY in excess of $52 million per year would be obtained simply by taking three years and a penny more than $156 million on the back end of the existing deal.
As of right now, I'm not sure it would be good to address the Mahomes contract. He knows his worth and as even said in the past, the rings mean way more than the money, and that the money will always be there on and off the field.
The Chiefs have other needs when it comes to contract situations. They need to get Chris Jones an extension, as we all know he has wanted one for some time, and he is now the best defensive tackle in the league after a down year from Aaron Donald last season.
Sure, it would be awesome to pay the man who has made Kansas City a powerhouse, more money. But, right now just isn't the right time. I will say, Floria does have sources and inside information, so, this prediction is coming from somewhere. I would be on the lookout.
