The Kansas City Chiefs now have all of the facts regarding WR Tyquan Thornton’s dislocated ankle.

Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle after a 55-yard reception in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Raiders. Thornton rode the cart off the field, saw his dislocated ankle reduced, and flew back with the team on Sunday. He underwent extensive tests on Monday to determine the severity of his ankle injury.

According to reports from NFL Network and CBS Sports, Thornton will require surgery to repair his dislocated ankle. He will have surgery sometime this week, and then rehab and recovery will begin.

Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton has a slim chance to return for 2026 playoffs

Both reports on Thornton’s ankle surgery included a potential return timeline. December would be the early end, while January is probably more realistic. If the Chiefs make a deep playoff run, they could potentially get Thornton back.

“The recovery timetable is expected to be 3-4 months and there’s even a small chance of a late season return,” CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz wrote.

“After extensive tests today, Tyquan Thornton is expected back within 12 to 16 weeks, sources say. He’ll have surgery within the week, and there is a real chance at a late-season or playoff return,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote.

Through four weeks, Thornton has been the Chiefs’ leading wide receiver with 11 receptions on 15 targets for 219 yards. The next closest receiver? Rashee Rice with 13 receptions for 190 yards. Rice also left Week 4’s win over the Raiders with a hamstring injury, which is not believed to be serious.

The Chiefs will be without Thornton for a significant period. Rice could be back after the Week 5 bye week. The Chiefs are down at least one of their top two wide receiver options through the first four weeks of 2026. They’ll need players like Xavier Worthy, Cyrus Allen, and Jalen Royals to pick up the slack after the bye week. It could open a chance for Andrew Armstrong and Omari Evans on the K.C. practice squad. They could even add to the wide receiver room via free agency or trade in the coming weeks.
