Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes added to his already vast highlight reel on Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers via one of the most incredible plays you'll ever see.
Mahomes looked like he was dead to rights a couple of times on a play near the goal line, but he somehow navigated his way out of trouble and flipped the football to Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the end zone for the score.
My description of the play doesn't even come close to doing it justice.
After the game, reporters asked Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce about Mahomes' spectacular play.
Kelce, unsurprisingly, was impressed.
“The NFL hasn’t seen anything like Mahomes, I promise you that," said Kelce after the Chiefs' win. "You saw it today – he’s the Houdini of our era. The guy just finds ways to make plays throughout the game. Big-time third down, big-time goal line plays [and] just willing our team to the endzone, willing our team to win. That’s our ultimate leader, man.”
That was definitely a Houdini-like move by Mahomes on that goal-line play.
When Mahomes was asked about the "Houdini" nickname bestowed upon him by Kelce, the former NFL MVP had a humble response.
“Travis always has the great nicknames," said Mahomes. "I just try to win, man. At the end of the day, that’s what I try to do. It’s not like I’m planning these things where I’m throwing sidearm or whatever it is, spinning, running around. I always say I’m a competitor, I’m going to find whatever way I can to make our team have success. Today was a spin and a little, I don’t know, a basketball shot that ended up a touchdown.”
Mahomes may not want to say it, but I will — No. 15 is the most complete quarterback in the NFL playing today. There are some great young quarterbacks in the league — Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, etc — but Mahomes is far and away the class of the field.
