The Las Vegas Raiders had one of the most important decisions in their franchise’s history to make this offseason. Picking the wrong head coach could have set this franchise back even further than it already was. Given its recent on-field failures and the repeated hiring of the wrong staff, this was beyond important.

It’s early, and there’s no real way to know yet if Klint Kubiak was the right decision. But it certainly feels that way. He’s already got his fingerprints all over this roster. Kubiak has already put together a great staff. And surely it’s one that’s better on paper than the one Pete Carroll assembled last year.

The defensive coordinator position was done the right way. While the OC position wasn’t looked at as a big deal, it was done the right way, too. Andrew Janocko has everything they needed. And he could not pass up on the opportunity.

Raiders’ new offensive coordinator details why he couldn’t pass on the job

“It was the opportunity to continue my journey with coach, and he and I have been in a bunch of different places together,” Janocko said. “Our families have grown up together, our kids have gone to school together. So when that opportunity presented itself, that was something we thought really special, really unique in this business — to help somebody and be with someone.

“To have a new opportunity with somebody you’ve grown with in the profession, who’s been through lows or highs throughout your career. And then doing it at such a historic place like this, one of the most revered franchises in National Football League history. The chance for me to come here, put my shield on, silver and black on, and represent that commitment to excellence, and you know, that ‘just win baby’ mentality is something we as a family could not pass up.”

The Raiders have to be glad they got their guy. They needed an offensive coordinator who fit what Kubiak is bringing. Not to mention, nailing the OC position with a rookie QB who’s set to be the franchise guy is important.
