‘He can be better than even he thinks he can’—Jeff Hafley isn’t putting a ceiling on one Miami Dolphins defender’s potential
Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley seems to have really hit it off with one of his most important defensive players.
The Miami Dolphins‘ pass rush found their breakout performance in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings. After three games with no sacks, the Dolphins wrangled Kyler Murray four times in Week 4.
The biggest contributor was Chop Robinson, who was a terror off the edge. Head coach Jeff Hafley offered a challenge to Chop on Wednesday after the game — he wants to see if Robinson can do it again. Friday morning, Hafley was asked if he felt Robinson responded to the challenge with his work in practice.
Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley seems to be buying big on Chop Robinson
“I mean, he’s had a great week of practice...Chop and I have an awesome relationship, and I love the guy. And he’s worked his butt off, and I’m going to keep telling him, regardless how good he thinks it is, I think he can be better than even he thinks he can. I think that’s important for a coach to do with a player that he truly cares and believes about. And I love the guy.“

This is an awesome thing to hear for a pass rusher in Chop. He’s had a challenging start to his NFL career. The ability to impact plays has always been present but the consistency in which he’s been able to sack the quarterback and make an impact has been scattershot. To know that Hafley has hit it off with him like this? It could do wonders for his confidence as a player.
You know what else would do wonders for Chop Robinson’s confidence? Another big game on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. He’ll have his hands full with massive right tackle Amarius Mims, a former first-round draft choice who has one of the most rare blends of athleticism and length in the game. Mims is a legitimate 6-foot-8 with 36.13″ arms. So Chop, after having success against a good tackle in Brian O’Neill, will need every ounce of his confidence (and Hafley’s). If it works, Chop’s stock is going to be sky high going into the bye week.
