I can’t guarantee you that the Miami Dolphins‘ best player is running back De’Von Achane. But I do know this: he’s on the short-list. And the list isn’t very long.

And he was also not present with the rest of the team at the start of the team’s offseason workouts at the beginning of the month. The reason why? Miami has been staring at the outlook of a potential contract extension for Achane throughout the early chapters of this offseason. Nothing, of course, has been done thus far.

But we do have our first sign of some major progress between De’Von Achane and the Dolphins organization thanks to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Miami running back De’Von Achane, who was not present for the start of the team’s voluntary off-season workout program last week, was spotted in the Dolphins’ training facility today, per sources. It is believed that Achane showed up as a sign of good faith as the two sides continue discussing a contract extension, per source.”

On De'Von Achane's attendance at offseason workouts

Achane’s set to enter into the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. At least for now. There does seem, now, to be some momentum that the dreaded ‘contract year’ can be avoided all-together. Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan stated on Wednesday that Achane is “not available for trade”.

But he also stated that there has been “positive conversations” and things are “trending in the right direction”.

Achane’s emergence at the team facility would seem to further affirm real progress on a potential contract. It also offers Miami an encouraging development that one of the team’s best players is in position to collect time on task with new head coach Jeff Hafley. The Dolphins’ offensive will look different thanks to coaching and quarterback changes. Achane missing only a week of workouts? That’s a nice development. Not as nice as that looming contract extension, but nice nonetheless.
