The questions surrounding the Miami Dolphins’ newest injury development extend far beyond Week 2

The Miami Dolphins’ top pass rusher is currently in concussion protocol, but his outlook for Week 2 is small potatoes compared to the big picture question.

Chop Robinson’s availability for the Miami Dolphins‘ Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers is now in question. The Dolphins’ best hope for a disruptive force on the edge this season was limited at Wednesday’s practice and is now in concussion protocol.

It’s a discouraging development, not only for the Week 2 outlook against the San Francisco 49ers, but also for the bigger picture around Miami’s 2024 first-round pick. That, in my opinion, is the biggest layer to Robinson’s latest injury news.

The Miami Dolphins must be mindful of a bigger concern beyond just Week 2

The immediate question is whether Robinson can suit up against San Francisco, sure. But the more troubling development is the pattern forming for Robinson over the past year. This marks Robinson’s third documented concussion in the past calendar year, a trajectory that could have significant implications for how confident the team is in his long-term future with the franchise.

Last season saw Robinson suffer a concussion in Week 9 and miss the team’s Week 10 win against the Buffalo Bills. He subsequently returned the following week — only to suffer a second concussion that season in Week 17 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Robinson would go on to miss the team’s Week 18 finale against the New England Patriots.

The timing of Robinson’s concussion is a bit of a mystery. Did he suffer the concussion against the Raiders and show symptoms afterwards? Or did an incident happen during the team’s Wednesday practice? It leaves his status very much up in the air. I do believe the short-term roster question is manageable given how Robinson and veteran Josh Uche platooned in Week 1. I’d suspect an elevation for former top-10 draft choice Clelin Ferrell would serve as the other corresponding move.

The long-term question is harder to answer. Not all concussions are created equally and we admittedly don’t know much of anything about this latest incident. But three incidents in a year is hard to overlook. Robinson’s developing history with concussions could become another factor working against him as the Dolphins’ new regime evaluates the roster. Figuring out who fits into their plans after 2026 will have a lot of layers. This could be a meaningful one.
