After Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray the starting quarterback, questions remain about the future of J.J. McCarthy
The expected finally happened with the Minnesota Vikings naming Kyler Murray the starting quarterback.
The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback for the 2026 season just two weeks into training camp.
It wasn’t just an expected decision; it was the correct one. Murray was progressing at a starting-caliber level, whereas J.J. McCarthy has never proven he can do so consistently, either in practice or game situations. If Murray ends up playing well, the Vikings will be proven right.
J.J. McCarthy’s future remains in doubt
Now that Murray has been named the starting quarterback, how things end up playing out with McCarthy will be fascinating to watch. Do we know that McCarthy is going to be willing to stay with the Vikings? He did make it clear during mandatory minicamp that he wants to be here.
“I think I made it very clear I wanted to be here before I got here. I love this organization, I love the coaching staff, I absolutely love these players to death. This is where I want to be. I feel like I can thrive in this system, and everything played out exactly how I wanted it. I wouldn’t want anything else to change,” said McCarthy.
Will he change his mind after losing out a borderline sham of a competition? Would a trade be something that the front office wants to make happen? Nolan Teasley as the new general manager could make a move to trade McCarthy, as there is no investment in the player.
Plus, there are the comments from Kevin O’Connell back in September of 2024 about how organizations fail young quarterbacks before young quarterbacks fail organizations. We know that part of the quote, but the second half of that is what’s most important.
“I think it’s important to understand that every single one of these guys is on a journey, a very difficult journey, that they need the support, they need the teammates around them. They need the systems in place to ultimately try to maximize who they are and what their potential is, because you’re still drafting players rich off of potential. And then everything that happens from that moment to when that potential becomes is really on the organization, if you’ve got the right guy that you’re bringing in,” said O’Connell.
“I do believe there’s some times where things just don’t work out, and then getting a chance to kind of wipe the slate clean and get a restart, while still using your previous experiences to kind of shape you know how you’re going to work, why you’re going to work, why things are important to you, will only make guys better in the end, and I’ve seen some examples of that in our league as well over the last few years.”
Sometimes, a player just needs time to get it right, and a new situation could be the crux of helping McCarthy succeed. There is also another intriguing element that O’Connell mentioned, saying “if you’ve got the right guy that you’re bringing in.” There’s a real possibility that McCarthy isn’t that guy, even though early reports were that the Vikings thought he was.
There is nothing certain about McCarthy’s future. He could be QB2 or QB3 this season or traded quickly. No matter what happens, it certainly feels like the McCarthy era in Minnesota is over.
