One of the top candidates for the Minnesota Vikings general manager search was Los Angeles Chargers assistant general manager Chad Alexander. His experience and scouting background were incredibly appealing for everything the Vikings are looking for with their search. On Friday, reports surfaced from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer that he declined the Vikings request for an interview.

Going into their interview process for the next general manager, the Vikings had nine external and one internal candidate. Interviews were taking place this week, and there were multiple intriguing names with Alexander being at the top of the list. Him declining the interview raises multiple questions.

Chad Alexander declining Minnesota Vikings interview raises serious questions

The intrigue with Alexander was there. He was hired by Ozzie Newsome and worked for Eric DeCosta, Joe Douglas, and Joe Hortiz during his career. One of the biggest strengths he has is building relationships. After the disaster that was the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era, the Vikings must get that aspect right.

Alexander telling the Vikings no raises a lot of questions, with the first being “why?” Other than Alexander liking being in Los Angeles with the Chargers, what other reasons could there be? The simple answer is both complicated and worrisome:

Kevin O’Connell and Brian Flores have too much power.

With how things went down with Adofo-Mensah’s firing and interim general manager Rob Brzezinski being involved, could it be a scenario where the power lies too heavily within those three? To be fair, this could be an overreaction, but it raises serious questions about why someone like Alexander would decline the Vikings. The Wilf’s are viewed as very stable owners who themselves don’t make rash decisions. It’s very curious, and it could have a ripple effect on the search.

As things stand, there are still nine candidates for the job.
