Romeo Doubs doesn’t hold back on his opinions of Mike Vrabel and the A.J. Brown-Patriots trade talk
Romeo Doubs is ready to help New England get back to the Super Bowl. He was asked about his first impressions of Mike Vrabel and the idea of A.J. Brown joining the Patriots on Tuesday.
Rookie minicamp is out of the way, which means it’s time for Mike Vrabel and all of the New England Patriots players and coaches to get together and tackle the rest of the offseason.
Now that both rookies and veterans have merged, it’s a great opportunity to get multiple perspectives on how things are going, so far. Free agent acquisition WR Romeo Doubs spoke with reporters on Tuesday and was asked about a multitude of topics ranging from first impressions of Vrabel to the idea of A.J. Brown joining the team.
Romeo Doubs has been impressed with how Mike Vrabel coaches the Patriots
Per Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Doubs has not only been impressed with how Mike Vrabel goes about business with the Patriots – he’s very appreciative of Vrabel’s former playing days with the Steelers, Patriots, and Chiefs.
“I love him,” Doubs told reporters. “[He’s a] very energetic dude [and a] players’ coach. It’s rare you get a head coach who was a player in this league and worked his way through the ropes to be a really solid coach…
“… I’m just really blessed to be around him.”
Vrabel is obviously dealing with the fallout from his scandal involving Diana Russini, so Doubs’ words do carry weight. Players have typically loved playing under Vrabel and honestly, his ability to connect with these guys probably plays a role in why he hasn’t been fired or forced to step down amid all the off-field chaos.
Doubs likes the idea of A.J. Brown joining the Patriots’ receiver room
Doubs would be the Patriots go-to receiver if the season started today and we all know how receivers relish being the top option. That would change, however, if A.J. Brown were to join the Patriots. Doubs would quickly fall to No. 2 in the pecking order and logically so.
That doesn’t affect Doubs’ outlook on the idea of Brown coming to New England. In fact, Doubs would be ecstatic based on what he said Tuesday.
“I have a ton of respect for him,” said Doubs. “He’s been a dude in this league for quite a long time [and] if he’s here I’d love to have him around and if not, I still wish him the best because he’s one of the best in this league.”
The addition of Brown would immediately give the Patriots a viable 1-2 punch at receiver and Doubs knows that. Sure, he’d love to show Vrabel and Co. they made a smart investment when they signed him to his four-year, $68 million contract by becoming the main wideout. At the same time, though, he understands what Brown can do for him matchup-wise and the residual effect can be just as good, maybe even better, than what he’d do as the No. 1 option without Brown on the field.
Either way, it’s clear things are going well for the veteran receiver and that’s key as the Patriots try and get back to the Super Bowl in 2026.
