The New Orleans Saints got a productive performance from practice squad running back Tony Jones Jr. in Week 2. Averaging just 2.8 yards per carry, Jones Jr. got the job done in the biggest situations. He scored the team's only two touchdowns in the game.
Jones Jr. had an increased role after an injury to starting RB Jamaal Williams. His impact may have played a role in a roster move by the Saints on Tuesday, too. They waived practice squad running back Kirk Merritt.
It's possible that Merritt returns to the PS, but that's not the case right now. Jones Jr. is allowed one more PS elevation on game day before the team must sign him to a contract for the rest of the season.
Alvin Kamara is out one more week due to suspension. Jones Jr. could be the lead running back in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers if Williams must miss the game.
It will be intriguing to see if the Saints add another veteran running back to the active roster for Sunday. We could also possibly see an increased rushing package for Taysom Hill.
