Giants WR room suffers another concerning blow after ESPN NFL Insider reveals potential serious injury during OTA practice

The New York Giants just suffered an injury at a position group where they can hardly afford it. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the team fears the worst about the injury suffered by Gunner Olszewski in OTAs.

If there was one thing that the New York Giants couldn’t afford, it was another injury at the wide receiver position. That’s exactly what happened on Friday, May 29, during the team’s latest Organized Team Activities (OTAs) practice.

Multiple reports indicate that WR Gunner Olszewski went down with a non-contact injury during practice. He was seen slamming his helmet on the ground, and his teammates gathered around to take a knee as the training staff tended to him. He was eventually carted off the field from practice due to the injury.

New York Giants Wide Receiver Injuries 2026

The Giants have several injuries at the wide receiver position that they’re currently navigating, including star WR Malik Nabers coming off a serious knee injury.

  • Malik Nabers is dealing with a knee injury. He underwent a debridement procedure to remove scar tissue. It’s unclear when he’ll return to the field.
  • Darius Slayton has been sidelined after undergoing core-muscle surgery to repair a sports hernia. He is expected to return by training camp in July.

Giants WR Gunner Olszewski feared to have suffered a torn Achilles in latest OTA practice

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the non-contact injury is feared to be an Achilles injury. If confirmed, this would end Olszewski’s 2026 NFL season before it even begins.

A seven-year NFL veteran who has made his mark on special teams, Olszewski has recorded just 25 career receptions for 325 yards and a receiving touchdown. He has 122 career punt returns for 1,386 punt return yards. Word out of the Giants’ camp this offseason is that he was expected to take on an outsized role in filling in for Nabers and Slayton while they recovered from injury.

Where do the Giants go at the wide receiver position from here?

The Giants’ wide receiver depth chart is now quite depleted. They’re down to Calvin Austin III, Darnell Mooney, Jalin Hyatt, and rookie Malachi Fields. Those are the top options at the position. They’ve been urged to re-sign WR Odell Beckham Jr., but nothing is imminent there. The reality is that adding other free agent WRs should be on their radar. Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, and DeAndre Hopkins headline the players available at the position. Tyreek Hill is a player who could be added later in the year, assuming he’s able to get healthy from his knee injury.
