Giants urged by national outlet to make questionable move that clashes with current roster situation
New York has an obvious question mark with Malik Nabers’ knee injury situation, but the front office has to keep a long-term approach.
The New York Giants are building the roster with a long-term process in mind. That’s why they allowed Wan’Dale Robinson to walk, drafting Malachi Fields to replace him. The wide receiver room has Malik Nabers, a true rising star, and some mid-level pieces who’ll still ideally have productive years ahead.
But Bleacher Report doesn’t think this is enough. In an article with moves left to make, Kristopher Knox writes that the Giants should sign a veteran wide receiver.
Veteran options for the Giants
According to Knox, Malik Nabers’ knee injury is the big reason to look for options.
“The New York Giants may not have Malik Nabers at the start of the regular season, as he recovers from a torn ACL. While they’ve added the likes of Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, and third-round rookie Malachi Fields, they should look to add another veteran to help second-year QB Jaxson Dart.
“The Giants have reportedly considered a reunion with Odell Beckham Jr., who also played under head coach John Harbaugh in Baltimore. If that doesn’t materialize, veterans like Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins should be on the proverbial table.” — Kristopher Knox
What they could add
Realistically, the Giants won’t compete for a Super Bowl this year. Sure, a player like Stefon Diggs could come in and help a young quarterback in Jaxson Dart — and that has value in itself. Odell Beckham would bring value based on his connection with New York fans and with the franchise.
But the Giants need their young players to develop. It’s not just about this season, it’s what the team can be two, three years from now.
Obviously, Nabers’ health situation after a lost season in 2025 is the most important factor — nobody has a ceiling close to his on the roster. But having an answer on what Malachi Fields can do with more snaps and targets also matters for the coaching staff.
The Giants could invest, and having another cheap veteran in the mix wouldn’t be an absurd idea. But the front office has to have an understanding of the team’s timeline, and adding an older receiver won’t be in line with that at this point.
