John Harbaugh reveals franchise-altering view of Giants QB Jaxson Dart after dominant Week 1 win
The Giants are already perceiving a jump from Dart in his second NFL season, and it’s exactly what the team could hope for.
The New York Giants won their first game under new head coach John Harbaugh on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, 28-20, and the performance was probably better than any Giants fan could have anticipated. The result validated exactly why New York made the bet on a head coach like Harbaugh, who would give the team a higher floor. The ceiling looks compelling too after beating Dallas at MetLife Stadium.
One particular point stood out, and it was the clear step forward of quarterback Jaxson Dart in Year 2. Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and was sacked only twice, posting a passer rating of 134.2. That’s an impressive performance against a Cowboys’ defense that was bad last year but was expected to improve this season. The fact that Dart was able to exploit the defense’s weaknesses with consistency was notable.
“Seeing the quarterback execute what he did,” Harbaugh said. “And he had a lot on his plate, too, and we can get better in and out of the huddle, to the line, calling the plays. All those kinds of things are operational, but I thought Jaxson did a great job of managing that because it was a lot for him to manage, and then making the plays. And he made some throws, man. I mean, some of the throws, like to Likely on the sidelines, some of those throws were just pinpoint accurate-type throws. It was a great performance by Jaxson.”
Dart’s ability to handle the operational demands of a new system while still delivering precision throws is the type of development that can alter a team’s trajectory, and John Harbaugh knows how impactful this may be for the offense.
Offensive approach makes it harder for opposing defenses
The Giants’ offensive performance was excellent not only because they scored 28 points, but because they created an environment where several players contributed. Dart added 54 rushing yards to his passing totals. Running back Cam Skattebo rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Isaiah Likely hauled in eight receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Malik Nabers finished with six receptions for 69 yards.
Five pass-catchers had at least two receptions and at least 20 yards. That kind of distribution is a signal of the identity the Giants want to build under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. A balanced attack with multiple weapons keeps defenses guessing and prevents opponents from keying on a single playmaker. If Dart continues to progress at this rate, New York’s ceiling could be far higher than most projected heading into the season.
