The New York Jets may have new management in town, but they're taking care of their own all the same.
One day after the Jets gave Garrett Wilson what equates to a record-setting wide receiver contract, New York is once again handing out generational money and a record-setting contract to a member of the 2022 NFL Draft class. Cornerback Sauce Gardner has joined Wilson in securing an extension — he'll be signing a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension to stay on-board with the Jets through the end of the 2030 season.
Gardner, who shined immediately upon his arrival into the NFL, took to social media to express his thanks to his reps, the Jets, and the fans for their support.
Sauce shares emotional thanks to announce record-setting deal
Gardner has seen his shine fade just a bit over the past year after watching fellow top draft choice Derek Stingley Jr. explode with 10 interceptions over the past two seasons. Stingley Jr. was taken one spot ahead of Gardner in the 2022 NFL Draft. But there's little question that the long, physical defender is one of the best young impact defenders in the game and he'll now serve as a key cornerstone for the Jets into the foreseeable future.
With a new regime in place, there was some question on how quickly New York would prioritize these deals for players from the old guard. As it turns out, neither Garrett Wilson or Sauce Gardner will step onto the practice field at training camp without a new deal in hand and generational wealth to support their efforts to turn the Jets around.
As the Jets attempt to kickstart their new build under head coach Aaron Glenn, having your drafted stars bought in is a nice way to emphasize the importance of buying in and developing your craft. Gardner has been bought in from the jump and now the Jets are doubling down.
