Athletic freak Uar Bernard is still learning the sport, but the physical talent is undeniable.
The Philadelphia Eagles might have a hidden gem on their hands. Uar Bernard, the 6-foot-4 athletic freak who has never played football, is already turning heads at training camp with his explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. Video surfacing from practice shows the defensive tackle getting off the line with a burst that has Eagles fans buzzing, and it’s only his fifth practice with the team.
Now, Vic Fangio is preaching patience with Bernard, and that makes sense. The guy has never played organized football. At 6-foot-4 with that kind of athletic ability, if Bernard can just learn the technique and start stacking reps, he could emerge as a legitimate weapon for this Eagles defense down the line.
Bernard’s ceiling is worth getting excited about
Bernard just needs experience, and the good news is he’s learning from some of the best in the building. The Eagles have a coaching staff and a defensive infrastructure that knows how to develop raw talent, and Bernard has that with elite upside.
Could it take a couple of years? Probably. But training camp returns so far are extremely encouraging. Philadelphia has always been a team that invests in development, with Jordan Mailata as a big recent example, and Bernard looks like the kind of project that could pay off in a major way.
