Jalen Hurts' return to Houston went according to plan for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia won Thursday night 29-17 over the Houston Texans, improving to 8-0 on the season for the first time in franchise history. All the doubts surrounding Hurts as a franchise quarterback are gone. Yet, the 24-year-old star is downplaying the historic start because he believes that there is still more to come.
"I know it's special for the city of Philadelphia," Hurts, who was 21-for-27 for 243 yards, told reporters after the game. "I mean, I've been 8-0 before and lost the national championship. Just take it day by day. We haven't accomplished anything yet. It's a day-by-day thing of us controlling things we can, playing to our standard and trying to grow every day. I think that's truly what it's about."
Hurts' lack of excitement indicates that he knows there is another level the Eagles can reach. And if anyone knows what it means to start undefeated, it's Hurts. He played on an Alabama team in college that started undefeated, but the job wasn't done because they lost the national championship.
The same goes for the Eagles this season. Starting undefeated is one thing. Continuing to win when the games really matter is another. Hurts understands that, and he is ready to take his game to another level when those moments arrive.
That is what makes Hurts special. He always has a sense of when to take his game to the next level. The Eagles have banked on him all season. And if Hurts' words ring true, he won't rest until Philadelphia is a city of champions once again.
"Being able to get a win," Hurts said when asked what moment would be his biggest memory. "There's a lot to be grateful about. There's a lot to reflect on and look at the things that we did well. There are also a lot of things that we can improve on. I'm not gonna make excuses about anything or the short week. We have a standard of play, we want to play to that at all times. It's a learning experience for us. It's a formative experience, that'll only build us up. I truly think the only direction is to rise. Personally, playing in the city of Houston, being the first time playing back home, that's a special moment for me personally. I think the job is still not done."
