‘Get off my field’– San Francisco 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw sends blunt message to Sean Payton after revenge win over Broncos
Dre Greenlaw had a strong message for his former head coach after a 12-tackle performance against his old team, and the postgame footage got heated fast.
Dre Greenlaw got his revenge on the Denver Broncos, and he made sure his former head coach Sean Payton heard about it.
The San Francisco 49ers beat the Broncos on Sunday, and the spiciest footage of the day came after the final whistle. San Francisco linebacker Dre Greenlaw ran straight at Broncos coach Sean Payton, his head coach in Denver just one season ago. It took fellow 49ers linebacker Fred Warner holding him back to keep the moment from escalating.
Look, you don’t see that often. Players will talk trash with opponents all day long, but running right up to a head coach after a game and getting in his face is a different level. That tells you how much this one meant to Greenlaw.
Greenlaw didn’t hold back on Payton
Greenlaw wasn’t shy about what he said in that moment, either. He told the San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch exactly what the message was: “I told him to get the (expletive) off the field. That’s it. Get the (expletive) off the field.”
Now, that alone would be enough to make headlines. But Greenlaw went further. He said Payton hadn’t spoken to him since November of last season, and the way his exit from Denver was handled clearly still bothers him.
“He couldn’t be man-to-man and call my phone and say, we’re going to cut you,” Greenlaw said.
That’s a big deal. Greenlaw is a respected veteran who has been through a lot in this league. When a player like that calls out a head coach publicly, it’s coming from somewhere real. I’ll tell you this much, I don’t think he’s losing any sleep over the reaction.
How the Broncos breakup went down
Greenlaw’s time in Denver was short and rough. After a long start to his career with the 49ers, he spent just one season with the Broncos. In that one season he battled injuries, and even served a one-game suspension for verbally threatening an official, finishing with 43 tackles in only eight games.
After that, Denver made the move to officially release him on March 12, 2026, with a post-June 1 designation. That move saved the Broncos roughly $8.19 million in salary cap space. From a pure business standpoint, I understand it. Denver got limited production from Greenlaw and had a chance to free up real cap room. Teams make those calls every offseason.
But again, the way it’s done matters to players. Greenlaw’s complaint isn’t that he got cut. It’s that Payton never picked up the phone to tell him himself. Fair or not, that kind of thing sticks with a guy, and it clearly fueled him on Sunday.
Greenlaw is back home and playing like it
Here’s the best part for San Francisco. Greenlaw turned around and signed a one-year deal to return to the Bay, and he has been a great addition to this defense.
Sunday was maybe his best showing yet. Greenlaw led the 49ers with 12 tackles and was flying all over the field. He was even yelling at the Broncos sideline at one point during the game. You could feel the energy every time he was around the football.
Make no mistake, this wasn’t just a player getting a few shots in at his old coach. Greenlaw backed up every word with his play. He was the best defender on the field in a game he obviously had circled.
And that’s what makes this reunion work so well. The 49ers know exactly what they have in Greenlaw. He knows the scheme, he knows the locker room, and he plays next to Warner, the guy who once again had his back on Sunday, literally holding him back from Payton. Is this the last we hear of Greenlaw and Payton? Probably not. Payton will get asked about it, and Greenlaw doesn’t seem like a guy who’s going to walk anything back.
Greenlaw is home and playing with a massive chip on his shoulder. If he keeps playing like this, the 49ers defense is going to be just fine, and Denver might end up regretting how it handled his exit.
