San Francisco 49ers get massive sigh of relief as key offensive player avoids serious injury after concerning Week 4 exit
San Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, and an MRI brought relatively good news. At least for San Francisco that is.
Is this the good injury news the San Francisco 49ers have been waiting for all season? Relatively speaking, yes. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that an MRI revealed a sprain and a bone bruise. Juszczyk is now expected to miss two to three weeks.
That is good news by 49ers standards, though the bar sits about as low as it can go. Look, you don’t need me to tell you this anymore. San Francisco has been crushed by injuries all season long, and the trouble started in the preseason. Juszczyk should be back in the fold soon, and for this team, that counts as a win.
When could Kyle Juszczyk return for the 49ers?
The schedule doesn’t do the Niners any favors. San Francisco travels to face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday with first place in the NFC West on the line. The 49ers then host the Washington Commanders the following week on Monday Night Football before facing the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 25.
With the quick turnaround from that Monday night game to the Sunday trip to Atlanta, I think the earliest we see Juszczyk is against the Falcons.I just don’t see him playing against the Commanders with a short week following. It at least wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do.
San Francisco also has a bye after the Falcons game and doesn’t play again until it faces the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 8. That gives the coaching staff the option to hold Juszczyk out for three weeks and bring him back against the Raiders, roughly a month from now. Still, it doesn’t sound like an injury that should drag on that long.
How Kyle Shanahan can replace his Swiss Army knife
Now, the bigger question is how the 49ers plan to cover for Kyle Juszczyk while he’s out with injury. I trust 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to figure out the personnel and alignments, and we all should. He has already dealt with injuries at other spots, especially wide receiver, and he has made it work.
But make no mistake, Juszczyk is the “Swiss Army knife” of this offense. San Francisco can do so many things with him at fullback. He is a tremendous blocker, and he has proven over his time with the Niners that he can be a real threat in the passing game, too. You don’t replace that with one guy.
If Shanahan still wants to run sets with a fullback, a tight end is the most logical candidate. Brayden Willis and Luke Farrell both make sense. San Francisco could also elevate Khalil Dinkins or Jack Stoll from the practice squad. And don’t rule out tight end George Kittle lining up back there at times. Shanahan loves moving Kittle around, and this would give him another excuse to do it.
The other route is simpler. We could see a lot more personnel packages without a fullback at all, just running backs, receivers, and tight ends, with nobody lined up between quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. That would change the look of this offense in a big way, but Shanahan has the creativity to pull it off.
Good news, all things considered
The 49ers will feel Juszczyk’s absence for however long he’s gone, especially with Seattle and first place in the division waiting on Sunday. He does too many little things for this offense to just disappear without a ripple.
But again, this is about as good as injury news gets for San Francisco this season. Plenty of players on this roster are going to miss significant time. Juszczyk isn’t one of them. I think he’s back on the field before the bye, and this offense will be better for it down the stretch.
