Russell Wilson may find himself back on the football field—but with a twist
Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson may end up back on the sideline soon. But with a twist.
Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been enjoying life off of the gridiron this fall. He’s been a pleasant addition to the studio on Sundays, keeping himself involved in the game, even if he isn’t actively playing.
But you know how it goes for many pro athletes. The “itch”. It’s hard to scratch. Especially when you walk away to try something new. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Wilson is connected with a new job opening in football — but not one behind center. Wilson has reportedly interviewed for a completely different gig: collegiate head coach.
Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly interviewed for the North Carolina State University head coaching vacancy
What a turn of events this would be. Wilson, of course, played at both Wisconsin and North Carolina State during his college career. I couldn’t possibly give you the first indication of what a head coaching tenure in the ACC would look like. And I’d admittedly be lying if I said I didn’t want to see Wilson continue to shine in the studio covering NFL games. I think he’s got a knack for it.
But if he’s got the itch and this could scratch it? Good for him. Wilson will, of course, need to ultimately land the job. And that’s no sure thing — he’s not even the only former NFL quarterback on the list of interviewees. Unlike Wilson, Philip Rivers has had his name floated out about coaching jobs before. And in his time away from the game (2025’s cameo not withstanding), Rivers has been coaching at the high school level.
One thing you absolutely can’t say about this story? That North Carolina State isn’t willing to turn over every stone in search of the right leadership for their football program. I’d be surprised if they ultimately find it in Wilson. But the fact that he’s even on the list of possibilities is, well…something.
