Baker Mayfield points out a major problem the Buccaneers had against the Jaguars during Tuesday’s joint practice
Baker Mayfield is never afraid to speak his mind and he did just that after the Buccaneers finished joint practice with the Jaguars on Tuesday.
Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers squared off against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a joint practice session on Tuesday and the signal-caller clearly didn’t like how things went down.
“I thought they gave us some good looks. They were playing with their hair on fire. I’ll say that,” Mayfield told reporters. “If this was a full game I don’t think we would have came out on the the winning side of it. So, [it was] just a little eye-opening. [I’ve] got to get back and watch the tape. You know, it’s never as good or as bad as you think it is. But I think from from my standpoint, they out-physicald us, and that’s that’s never what you want to have.
“(It) doesn’t matter who we have out there. You want guys that are going to do their very best to be the more physical team and want it more, and I don’t know if we did that today.”
The practice didn’t end well for Mayfield, in particular. Per reports, he threw an errant ball after what appeared to be a miscommunication and it resulted in an interception that sealed the day.
Overall, it sounds like it was a mixed day for both the offense and the defense. But, that’s what you kind of want because it allows you to really evaluate where things are going right and where they’re going wrong. Especially when it’s against another team.
And at the same time, Mayfield thinks the offense has things down when it comes to terminology and understanding Zac Robinson’s system. Therefore, it’s time to go out and start executing at a high level. The Buccaneers didn’t do that, however, and Mayfield wasn’t the only who pointed out the problem.
Chris Godwin Jr. also noted how the Buccaneers need to be better when they face off against the Jaguars in Wednesday’s joint practice, as he told reporters the team needs to “pull our heads out of our asses“. His perspective surrounds the “lull” the Buccaneers offense went through during the middle portion of practice.
They’re strong remarks, but Mayfield and Godwin Jr. are major leaders on this team and good leaders aren’t afraid of calling guys out when they need to. In a constructive way, of course.
Baker Mayfield and Ted Hurst have a big day during Buccaneers-Jaguars joint practice
Reporters on site noted how Hurst had a very strong day. He caught a touchdown pass early on and made several nice plays after that. The rookie continues to flash throughout training camp and the preseason, which is a good development for the Buccaneers’ receiver room.
Tez Johnson had a good quote when asked about Hurst, stating he was “out there doing what he does“. He added Hurst is really starting to understand the defensive coverages and DBs he’s going against, which is great to hear.
An effective Hurst means the Buccaneers have a strong option in the both the downfield passing attack and the red zone. If that sounds familiar then, yep, Hurst can help fill the giant void that Mike Evans left behind.
That’s not saying he’s going to be Evans, but he can certainly help the passing attack adjust to life without the future Hall-of-Famer.
We’ll see how Mayfield and the Buccaneers respond on Wednesday.
