ESPN wants Commanders to take an unnecessary risk with eight-time Pro Bowl receiver when better options are available
The Commanders definitely need another proven wide receiver to help Jayden Daniels and the passing attack, but ESPN’s latest suggestion simply doesn’t fit the bill.
The Washington Commanders need to add more help to the wide receiver room and ESPN’s Aaron Schatz believes the team should sign eight-time Pro Bowler and five-time first-team All-Pro, Tyreek Hill.
Schatz added the caveat of “if healthy” to his analysis, but that’s the exact point: Tyreek Hill is not healthy and no one knows when he will be.
His agent Drew Rosenhaus even recently confirmed as much, stating Hill remains in the “midst of a rigorous recovery process” and “there isn’t a set timetable” for his return. Hill tore his ACL, along with multiple other ligaments, and dislocated his knee in Week 4 of last year, ending his season early.
It’s an unnecessary risk to take because on top of the injury, the Hill experience has always been a volatile one. Things have only gotten worse in the past few years, as Hill has crossed over into his 30s and it remains to be seen how the knee injury piles on. His best quality has always been his speed — how much of that will be retained after spending his offseason rehabbing? Make no mistake about it, Hill has incredible natural ability — as evidenced by his summer moonlighting as an Olympic sprinter last year.
Tyreek Hill’s career stats
Sure, Tyreek Hill is nowhere close to the player he was during the prime of his career, but the numbers he’s put up over the last 10 seasons are stupidly good:
- Receptions: 819
- Receiving yards: 11,363
- Receiving touchdowns: 83
- Yards per reception: 13.9
- Total touchdowns (includes kick returns): 95
- Super Bowls: 1
- Pro Bowls: 8
- First-team All-Pros: 5
- Games played: 145
Then there’s the football character aspect. Hill has no shortage of questionable and poor decisions on his ledger off the gridion, ranging from law suits with OnlyFans models, being detained on the morning of the Dolphins’ 2024 season-opening game against the Jaguars, an alleged incident at a marina that involved a physical altercation the summer before, and Hill going into business for himself at the end of the 2024 season and removing himself from a “must win” game three plays into the second half. And that’s JUST in Miami. Worst things await deeper in his past.
But other than that, sure. Why not?
The Commanders have much better options to choose from than Tyreek Hill
From Stefon Diggs, to DeAndre Hopkins, to Keenan Allen, to Deebo Sameul – hell, even Brandon Aiyuk and all his tomfoolery are better routes to take than Hill. Part of Schatz’s reasoning for Hill stems from his downfield ability. Well, OK, Brandin Cooks is still available, too, if that’s the case.
Not only is he unavailable, Hill’s career was on the downslide before his injury. The Commanders don’t have the luxury of sitting around and waiting to see what he can do on the field after the injury and odds are 2026 will be basically be a redshirt season, if you will.
They need a proven product, not a dice roll. Hopefully Adam Peters steers clear of this hypothetical.
