Stefon Diggs throws gas on the fire when it comes to the idea of him playing for the Washington Commanders
Stefon Diggs is still a free agent and it’s well-known the Commanders need another receiver to help Terry McLaurin. His recent comments add a layer of intrigue to the parties’ futures.
Stefon Diggs is a free agent and the Washington Commanders still need help at wide receiver.
Instead of rolling the dice on the embattled Brandon Aiyuk, the Commanders should look Diggs’ way.
Diggs is an older veteran, but showed he can still produce at a high level in 2025. I mean, the guy played around 55% of the offensive snaps in New England and still managed to snag 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. He also posted a career-best and very impressive 83.3% catch rate over the course of 17 starts.
Per Pro Football Focus, Diggs’ 2.42 yards per route run ranked fifth out of the 30 eligible wideouts with at least 98 regular season targets. That’s a better mark than guys named CeeDee Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, George Pickens, Justin Jefferson, and A.J. Brown.
Unlike Aiyuk, we know Diggs can still play at a solid level and he even expressed serious interest in joining up with the Commanders during a recent interview with Fox 5 DC.
“I never realized how many fans [there] was back home until I was a free agent and people were like, ‘Are you going to come back home?’” said Diggs. “Especially when they see me back. I’ve been living here for my whole life. I’ve been living here for 10 years. They [were] just like this, ‘Oh, we never see you.’ [and] I was like, ‘Man, y’all wasn’t looking.’
“[There are] a lot of hopes. We’re kind of figuring it out, working through some things. I did have a small piece of me [be] like, ‘Damn, it would be great to come home and play in front of the fans I used to play in front of as a young adolescent in college and just kind of doing something for the city.’ Hopefully, things do work out. We’ll see how it goes.”
Stefon Diggs is a far better option than Brandon Aiyuk for the Commanders, even with his own past issues
Diggs held a youth football camp earlier in the week while, well, Aiyuk posted a video of him dancing in a robe and underwear to Instagram.
Even with Diggs’ past troubles, which aren’t much to write home about, he still shows a greater sense of maturity and decision-making than Aiyuk. And again, Diggs showed just last year what he can provide on the field.
Diggs also makes sense in terms of fit. Last year basically saw him split reps between outside and inside at a near 50/50 rate. Whereas, Aiyuk plays mostly X, which is Terry McLaurin’s position. Sure, Aiyuk has the talent and ability to play the X, Z, and F, but again, we don’t know what that exactly looks like, these days.
Diggs was also named an offensive game captain for the Patriots, last year, and was named a team captain at certain points with the Bills and Texans. Sure, he’s had some blow ups on the sidelines and disagreements with teammates, but he’s also shown plenty of positive character traits, and play, that help the teams he’s been on.
And just to drive the point home one more time: He can still play at a solid level. We don’t know if Aiyuk can do that after sitting out the last year-and-a-half.
This is the move the Commanders need to make at receiver and it should immediately help Jayden Daniels and the passing attack.
