We've had some hints about how things would be changing for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting front under new general manager Jim Nagy.
The types of players they are targeting across the board, and how the archetypes at each position are changing have shifted under Nagy's direction. While it's still too early to tell how the results have been, the process has been fascinating to see unfold.
Nobody has outright pointed to Nagy in this process until now. In an interview with SoonerScoop, tight end Tyler Ruxer, the Sooners' newest commit, pointed directly to Nagy in his recruiting process.
"I think Jim Nagy was a big piece of this. He was the first person on staff to really find me. They really decided that they wanted to pursue me after he got the GM role there. It spoke a lot to me because most of his life, he has been looking at NFL talent and he saw it in me. I feel like he has a good eye for that kind of thing. He just said he felt like the tight end room at OU was something where there was room to come in and fill a spot. It was good hearing that from them. I have a lot of trust in Jim Nagy and think he’s going to be there for a long time."
Ruxer is listed at 6'4 and 220 pounds. As a junior, the TE/WR hybrid hauled in 43 catches for 893 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 20.7 yards per catch. Ruxer also notched some snaps at cornerback defensively, a surprising mix for a tight end.
He is also a surprisingly adept track star for his size, with an 11.14 100-meter time.
The four-star tight end chose the Sooners over Duke, West Virginia, Minnesota, Purdue, and Northwestern.
