Oklahoma Sooners land their third commitment of the 2028 recruiting class, and he’s considered a top-100 player in the country
The Oklahoma Sooners just landed a commitment from linebacker Jay Schell, and he’s as good as it gets.
The Oklahoma Sooners have landed four-star linebacker Jay Schell, one of the top defensive prospects in the 2028 recruiting class. Schell, a 6-3, 215-pound linebacker out of Georgia, chose OU over some big-time programs.
The Sooners have made a few predictions to secure pledges from other recruits, but none have materialized yet. There’s still plenty of time. The 2028 recruiting class doesn’t have to be finalized until Feb. 2028. But after landing Schell. The Sooners now have three commitments in the 2028 class.
Sooners 2028 commit Jay Schell is an elite linebacker
Schell is ranked the No. 9 linebacker in the 2028 recruiting class. According to Rivals’ industry rankings, he’s a top-120 player nationally. ESPN ranks him even higher at No. 97 overall and the No. 1 linebacker in the country. He’s also Georgia’s No. 13 player.
Being from Georgia is probably why Clemson was considered a favorite. Schell took six visits to Clemson, which is much closer than Oklahoma. He only took two visits to OU.
If you want to play linebacker at the highest level in the SEC, Brent Venables is the coach to play for. His track record at Oklahoma speaks for itself. Kip Lewis is poised to become one of the nation’s top linebackers this year and is already drawing attention as a potential draft pick. Owen Heineke is also right there among the elite at his position. Beyond these current stars, Venables has consistently developed linebackers who have thrived in the NFL.
Schell could contribute from day one at Oklahoma. He’s that good. And we know that the Sooners are not afraid to put freshmen on the field, especially on defense. They did so last season a ton. At 6-3 and 215 pounds in 2026 as a 2028 recruit, he could arrive in Norman ready to make an immediate impact.
